Default Installing updated binary packages
As you already know then in FreeBSD you can install ports and packages. Packages are binary- precompiled form of ports actually. If you just add some binary package after freebsd installation then you'll have not latest but slightly outdated binary from release. Here is command how to get latest- precompiled, bleeding edge software in your FreeBSD/PC-BSD installation:
# pkg_add -r yourapplication

I'd rather have binary packages that work 100% of the time without saying is missing please compile me.

I've had good luck with simple stuff but not with all apps.
