Hey all, version 1.2 of PC-BSD is now available for beta testing, both as an ISO and a patch file. Please only install this on a scratch system you don't mind experimenting on :) Here's the changelog for this release:

PCBSD 1.2 - Changelog

--------------------------
* Updated ports to current as of 6-26-06.
* Added py-qt and py-kde ports to default install. (Allows Super Karamba plugins to work)
* Cleaned up icons folders.
* Added DBSD Network / User Toolset into Control Panel.
* Convert PC-BSD tools to Control Panel modules.
* Update KMenu to display categories.
* Ctrl-alt-delete now launches the System Guard.
* Zip support included in default install.
* Added Bash to default install.
* Removed EISA support from default kernel.
* Setup CD insert notification to allow playing audio CD's and DVD's.
* Added denyhosts to default install for SSH security.
* Windows key now launches "K-Menu".
* Removed wireless support from install CD. (Fixes possible crash when detecting sound card)

Here's the links to download: (Please be patient if the file is not there yet, takes a while for mirrors to sync) :)

Please feel free to test these versions, and report any errors to bugs.pcbsd.org under version 1.2-beta. I hope to have 1.2 final out before the end of this month, in the next few weeks or so.

Desktopbsd package manager is not included- DBSD don't want us to use their hard work.

1.11a is just a bugfix release and 1.2 would be announced when it is tested and all major bugs fixed.

This is PC-BSD new release policy.

Quote:
1. Include features for release as stated in current roadmap.
2. Build release candidate and deploy it to betatesters at least 2 weeks before actual release.
3. Close/Fix bugs listed in bugs.pcbsd.org. Bugfixes is deployed with online update manager.
4. Build release and deploy to all users.
5. Edit roadmap according to community requests.

but if noone knows about a beta how would it be tested?

its nosense to announce it only in a thread which could be read only by a few people who want to test things.

We don't want to repeat 1.11 release fiasco with last minute bugfix. We don't want hear about frustrated users who found obvious bug and think that we are too lazy to test it before actual release. Maybe some translation is not completed and translators found some error they want to fix. This time there is fundamental changes like total rewamp on configuration panel and features we included first time. As seen on bugs.pcbsd.org page many bugs are fixed and we want to be sure that there is nothing that makes users feel uncomfortable.

Please be patient and test this beta. PC-BSD Team need your feedback. You can post your experiences on forums and file bugreports.

it's ok, but pls keep in mind that stable versions are always available for users and betas for testers.

no way, i'm not a tester and neither have the bandwidth to download such things :?

lets take a look at suse or fedora or mandriva, which all aims to be user-friendly. they all release alphas, betas, rc's or whatever you say, and announce them wherever its possible, of course, on distrowatch, too.

Our release cycle is too fast to announce every two weeks on major newsportals about yet another PC-BSD beta. Starting from version 2.0 there would be changes though. Ideal release cycle would be once in quarter.

When we feel that PC-BSD is good enough, then we start "spreadpcbsd" campain.

uh-uh. ok, it was just a suggestion though...

it's your choice, however.

bhna has a point here...

This is not very nice.

They actually licensed their software as BSD, created an official port which any FreeBSD user can install and use and say we shouldn't use it? :x

Plain ugly.
