you can press control + alt + function # key to switch to a console (desktop runs on cltr+alt+f5 afaik).

If you want to disable X starting, edit /etc/ttys and find the line that starts /PCBSD/bin/pdm (that's from memory, should be along that line) and change the "on" to an "off", save and reboot (requires root priv).

That will stop X from starting up on boot ;-)

Unfortunately I did try to change text mode that way. But looks like system hangs on that and nothing is allowed after, just shutdown (on laptop shutdown key). Is there at any part of the boot a way to reach X config?
Regards

if your systems not bootable you can use the install disks to boot off and mount the root partition manually.

When you get to the welcome screen (after setting lang/kb) it should be some thing like this

right click background -> xterm

mount /dev/ad0s*a /mnt (replace * with the slice # of your pc-bsd /)

and you can edit files that way

edit /mnt/etc/ttys

edit /mnt/etc/X11/xorg.conf

e.t.c.

and just reboot when finished.

if the 'edit' and 'ee' commands don't work, you'll have to use vi..
