Default How compile the PcBSD 1.4.1 kernel
Hi.

I am using PcBSD 1.4.1.1, based on FreeBSD 6.3-PRERELEASE. When i use /usr/sbin/sysinstall for get the kernel source and then can compile it, i get a message saying

"Warning: Can't find the `6.3-PRERELEASE' distribution on this FTP server...."

This is for all the ftp servers.

How can i get the correct kernel source for my PcBSD system?. I want to build my own kernel into my PC.

Thanks you very much, in advance.

Regards.

Check this discussion: http://forums.pcbsd.org/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=10930.

Again, I recommend you build your custom kernel only if absolutely necessary.

Thanks you very much, Friends, Galactic Dominator and graedus.

graedus: Why you recommend not build a custom kernel "only for fun"?. I think is not a very dificult procedure.

Thanks.

Regards.

For the sake of tweaking, I'd keep any customizing and efficiency efforts on a vanilla FreeBSD box.

On PCBSD, why fix what isn't broken? Just be aware that some of the customizations and additional functionalities assume the base pcbsd customized kernel. Also consider that any updates/patches and pbis specifically designed for the current version of PCBSD always has the possibility of breaking upon moving the defaults (PCBSD always assumes it's untainted). Although 1.4.1 is quite streamlined and less funky than previous versions, the experience of previous installments of PCBSD proved that breaking upon tweaking happened a lot.

Of course, as long as you are a seasoned FreeBSD user, are testing or you know by experience you'll benefit from some sort of extra customization, that shouldn't pose a problem. Just my two cents.

Okey. Thanks again, graedus.

I read the post you link before, and believe that the point is use the conf file /PCBSD/conf/PCBSD.i386 instead the usual in FreeBSD /usr/src/sys/i386/conf/GENERIC like base for be customized. Is this correct?.

i did a diff between both files and there are a lot of diferences. Great work from PcBSD guys!.

Regards.

Yes, use the one in /PCBSD/conf, the .i386 file is made for single CPU's with single cores and the .SMP one is for Multiple-CPU's and Multiple-Core CPU's.

It may take a lot of poking around to find it but I've generally found there is plenty of documentation around /usr/src/sys/i386/conf/ on the various things you can put in the file.
