Default "Vista Capable" lawsuit goes class-action !

and another one of interest on another website.

Personally I hope Microsoft does lose money in this although I don't really think it is fair to sue them. I think it was pretty obvious that you were going to need a more expensive version of Vista to get the real "vista" experience then a budget PC would suffice to run. I at least already knew this was likely to be the case before Vistas RC was ever released lol.

Given the choice between Vista Home Basic and XP Professional editions I would choose XP Pro any day of the week but then again I probably would choose it over Vista Home Premium too from some things that I've been hearing lol.

Full Disclosure:

I am the proud owner of a laptop that was "Designed for Windows XP" and "Windows Vista Capable" sticker on it that came with Windows XP Home edition. I bought the unit for the sole purpose of running FreeBSD on hardware we could afford so I'm not complaining ;-)

If however I was ever going to install Vista on this machine, I would have waited to buy a laptop until Vista gets it's SP1 release xD

Does any one know of a nice Powered by FreeBSD sticker I can replace it with? Hehehe.

Just out of curiosity, Terry, since you seem to have an informed opinion, how would you compare Vista Home Premium with XP Home? I have a new computer with Vista Home Premium and I can't find anything! It is so "push-button" that you can't even fix anything if Vista gives an error code (at least I can't). I am converting to PC-BSD, but I'm going to keep this computer as a dual-boot, so we can use all that MS-based software we've paid out the nose for over the years. I intend to install PC-BSD with Windows XP Home, but before I wipe off Vista I'd like to get your opinion.

Didn't mean to hijack this thread, but it seemed to be about done.

Tony

I've never used Windows Vista and franky wouldn't let it touch one of my machines with a ten foot cattleprod pointed at Bill Gates wallet.

A number of my friends love Vista (especially business editions), the kind that would enjoy some thing easier to use then more powerful interface design. #1 complaint is that Vista seems to have taken XP's GOD Complex as I call it to a hole new extreme with a new 'nag' feature.

Others, hate it -- one had to upgrade his Fathers PC and can't stand Vista because he's the one that has to deal with it. His own box runs XP Pro. I remember he once described Vista to me as if. We were to charge $10 to register on the site we maintain. Then go change the sites theme and say "Ok, you have to register, $10 more please!". Another tried wiping Vista off his laptop because he didn't like it and he could never get his paid for copy of XP to work on the box properly (drivers) so he reinstalled Vista.

If I was going to use Vista, I would buy a 3rd GB of RAM, one for Vista and 2 for gaming + programs. I'd also want the Vista Ultimate edition, because if I have to pay for it I want an upgrade to XP Pro/MCE, but I ain't gonna pay $300 for it ;-)

I think Vista Home Premium would probably compare well enough with XP Home... Personally I find XP Professional ideal because of the few extra 'perks'.

Yet I can get more then that out of the box on PC-BSD for less even if I bought a CD Set of PC-BSD or even OpenBSD lol. And more eye candy running OpenSUSE or Debian.

I actually feel sorry for Microsoft on this...the whole Vista Capable program reeked of Marketing Department, not OS Development.

I bet someone in the corporate partners program thought it was a good way of getting some more sales for Dell, HP, and other OEMs, so who cared if the specs were right?

And, of course, the end user suffers.

Microsoft is full of bright, capable, people...sad to see that they keep tripping over themselves.

Anyway, I beta-ed Vista, and I was || close to buying it, but couldn't pull the trigger.

Personally, I think it is a step forward for most desktop users, particularly with UAC enabled. Most people hate it, but I think it is a step in the right direction.

Keep in mind that those of us on BSD or Linux forums are technology elites....we don't click on everything that says "download me" like most of the great unwashed and clueless masses...having the OS say "are you sure you want to do that Kemosabe?" About damn time!

Other than that, I found Vista reasonably quick, with some nice eye candy, and...I'm really struggling for praise, I guess. It fixes a bunch of things wrong with XP/2000 and creates some new issues.
