Default Fatal Trap Error after install KDB does not help
HI there.

pls excuse my english

after some Weeks using pc-bsd 1.4 on my old Acer Travelmate 530 without any problems i have decied to kick Ubuntu from my workstation and use PCBSD 1.4.1. --> Bad Idea...

I got the Fatal Trap Error mentioned in the Knowledgebase, but I'm not able to resolve it.

I have turned off ACPI in the BIOS --> PCBSD freezes at "Loading configuration files." Oh sorry, after some minutes it wrote "Entropy harvesting: interrupts" (don't know what PCBSD want's to tell me....)

Booting with Option 2 (no ACPI) --> system resets after showing "PC-BSD is loading"

System:
CPU:
Intel P4 2,8Ghz
Mainboard:
ASUS P4P800SE
RAM:
1GB DDR1/400
Graphics:
ATI Radeon 9600, 256MB
DVD-Rom connected to SATA (PC-BSD seems to have problems with this drive during install, used USB-Drive to install)

I tried BSD on my notebook because I was not happy with several Linux-Distributions and i was quite impressed how fast and stable PCBSD runs on this device and now i want to install it on my Servers (freebsd) and all PCs (okay, my gamemachine will still use XP ).

since I am relative new to bsd (I'm a Windows Admin with a little knowledge on Debian and Solaris), I need some hints how I can solve this problem and where I have to look.

Thanks!

Maybe you can update your desktop computer bios. Usually that helps a lot.

I use the latest available BIOS for this Board. This PC is 2 years old and the motherboard was not a brand new model.

DesktopBSD 1.6RC3 works fine on this machine as well as FreeBSD 6.3 and 7.0B3 (without X). So I will give DesktopBSD a try.

maybe i will try a new PCBSD relaese in the future again.

thx

me again.

I can't stop to try it Just a Question:

Where is the difference between PCBSD and DesktopBSD or FreeBSD ? no, not the graphical Environment, but DesktopBSD and FreeBSD (6.3 an 7.0B3) installed fine and all of them worked excellent.

PCBSD seems to to have problems with the hardware detection, but is this part of the OS modified by the PCBSD-team? Booting with ACPI disabled via the bootmenu shows me, that it fails when the OS wants to detect the network-hardware (Broadcom onboard) or one setup behind (PC turns off itself after some minutes)

I want to give PCBSD a try becaue it's nearly the complete working environment i need, in DBSD i have to do much post-install work to abd I simply want a working environment.

I evaluate some OSses because we want to do a testdrive with an OSS-System in our company and PCBSD on my notebook is fascinating me.
