Default OSX look and feel
***Skip to last paragraph for question***

Hi all, this is my first BSD adventure, it is downloading right now. Quick history:
-Grew up on Macs late 80's early 90's
-Switched to windows in 2000 to learn programming
-Switched to Linux with Ubuntu 6.06, quickly switched to Kubuntu
-Have now gone back to mac (OSX) on my main system because Linux can't provide what I need for support in audio/video recording and editing

Now, on my second computer (AMD 3000+, nVidia 6200, DFI NForce4 MB, 1gb RAM), still running Kubuntu (7.04) but in research discovered that OSX (neXT OS) is based on BSD/Unix so I want to try it.

I noticed PC-BSD uses KDE, has Compiz by default, and easy package installs, so I'm 90% sold without even installing.

My question is, can I make PC-BSD feel like OSX? Specifically, I want the common bar for program menus, and a dock.

Mandriva 2008.0 offers such functionality in KDE, so Mac menu is 100% posible:

About dock, I use fbpanel for that:

but Avant Window Navigator should work better with Compiz:

About KDE style use domino:

Generally that should do the job

In KMenu>Settings(The second one, under actions; I have no idea why there's two 'settings' submenus)>Appearance and Themes>Window Decorations you can click on the "buttons" tab ( the uppermost tab; some window decorations also have a 'buttons' tab, just to keep things from being too easy) you can switch around the buttons to be arranged as they are on Mac windows.

You can also modify your panel to be a bit more like the lower panel in Mac OSX; just right-click on the panel and play around a bit.

Also, in the Control Center, under Desktop>Behavior, you can have the applications title bar displayed at the top of the screen like on a Mac (I'm not sure if this only works for KDE apps or not).

If you hunt around on kde-look, you'll find some other ways to make your PCBSD machine more Mac-ish.

But... don't restrict yourself to the Mac look-n-feel. KDE is very configurable; take what works for you from OSX and set things up to work the best for what you're doing with your machine.

Have fun!

I think there is a way to configure Gnome at least to look like a Mac, with the common title bar, if you're into that. I can't figure out why in the world people would want the common title bar at the top of the screen to host menu items for the application window currently in focus. This may have been a good idea back in the days of the very small screens of the Mac Plus, but now with 20" and larger monitors having a resolution of 1280x1024 or better, moving your mouse to the top of the screen to access a menu is daft, too much distance to move the mouse. The menus belong in the application window, like the default KDE, Gnome, and (gasp!) Windows. On the other hand the OSX dock is a good idea, perhaps we can get that feature in KDE/Gnome.
