Default Cannot install VMware tools in 1.4 virtual machine
I installed 1.4 from the virtual machine image on a mac running VMware fusion.
I put the virtual tools from the fusion application into the home folder.

Using the terminal I was unable to install the VMware tools because of a sudoers issu:

%sudo ./vmware-install.pl
Password: pcbsd
pcbsd is not in the sudoers file. This incident will be reported.
%

What's going wrong here? Doe anyone have an idea how to install VMware tools?

Nobody has permission to use sudo by default, since it's a rather large security hole if enabled.

Instead, use 'su'. When it prompts you for a password, enter root's password. You'll then enter into a root shell which you can use to do whatever you need.

Thank you Tim for answering my question so quickly. It solved my problem.
Another question comes to my mind though: "Why is it that sudo creates a security hole, while su does not". In my OSX terminal application I can sudo as administrator with my administrators pwd. Is this a security risk?

The school of thought is this:

With sudo, in order for someone to compromise your machine, they simply need to know the username and password of anybody in the sudoers list.

With the su method however, they need to know the username & password of somebody in the 'wheel' group of the machine AND the root password.

It just adds an extra layer of security and protection.

sudo can be handy however if you want to allow certain users to only run certain applications as root. You just need to be careful which applications you allow them root access to.
