Default At Start-up "file" & "media" process
I have an issue every time I start-up PC-BSD 1.4 beta - it starts fine, but there's a box saying that;

Error - Kdesktop
"The process for the file protocol died unexpectedly" and
"The process for the media protocol died unexpectedly"

(this screenshot might explain it better: http://www.spin.net.au/~76mini/error1.jpg - 80k)

The result is that it starts with no icons on my desktop. The fix is to restart the session. (Alt + Ctrl + Backspace)

It didn't do this when I first installed (fresh install), it started doing it fairly recently. I have updated since then.. perhaps that is the problem. (pkg_version -v shows I'm upto date, pkgdb -F shows no issues at all, and portmanager -u has an issue with bison-1.75_2,1 "marked IGNORE reason: conflicts with another port" - since I have bison2 installed instead.)

What do you all think?

I've used both PC-BSD & PCLOS on other machines without these startup error notifications, but last week I bought a ThinkPad 390E & installed PCLOS, where I get the same messages upon startup, erratically I might add, and without any apparent effect on the system or processes. A google search of the phrase, "The process for the media protocol died unexpectedly," indicates it has something to do with desktop icons not displaying, and that's my observation also. On PCLOS the desktop icons (like INSTALL) didn't display at all from the Live CD, so I had to install from the command line, and after the install the usual icons are present. I can't run or install PC-BSD on this ThinkPad because the BSD cd doesn't detect the 390E's hard drive.

Since I remember a nick like yours asking some thing in #kde awhile back about mounting stuff...

Have you changed any thing since the default install?

I would also suggest installing PC-BSD v1.4.1.1 -> The 1.4Beta is a bit dated ;-)
