Default Setting up a mail server on PCBSD
I would like to set up a mail server on my PCBSD box that I use for my web server.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what I program I should use and maybe were I could find a good how-to on setting it up on PCBSD. I installed POSTFIX and tried to figure out the installation but I can't even figure out if it is running. (It seems as if it isn't because I do a ps aux | grep post and I get nothing. ) I would like to be able to connect to it using pop. So I can use Thunderbird as my client.

Thanks for your responses in advance.

Michael

Remove and reinstall postfix and answer [Y] at the only prompt it asks. A ps aux should then return minimally,
Code:
root 1998 0.0 0.1 1520 1248 ?? Is 5:04PM 0:00.27 /usr/local/libexec/postfix/master
postfix 2000 0.0 0.1 1600 1288 ?? I 5:04PM 0:00.04 qmgr -l -t fifo -u
postfix 38485 0.0 0.1 1544 1232 ?? I 4:20PM 0:00.00 pickup -l -t fifo -u
after a reboot or a rehash and then as root or su,
Code:
postfix start

OK, Thanks, Not that is working and postfix it running.

Now how would I now connect to it to get my e-mail? How would I set up Thunderbird (or some other client) to connect to it?

Thanks for the response.

Generally a mail cilent like Thunderbird needs:

Protocol to use: i.e. pop/imap

Mail Server Address: i.e. mail.foo.org

Account Username: i.e. DocBar

Account Password: i.e. Posty

Shouldn't be to hard.

I'd really love to learn about mail servers innerds... I hope some day life leads me in a direction where I get to learn. Because free time doesn't :@
