Default Reset XF86Config file?!
Well to make a long story short, I tried to install the NVDIA drivers from the PBI. The resolutions weren't in widescreen, so I tried to add the resolution to the XF86Config file.

Since I was playing around with Wine and the game said I need 32bit color, I tried to add that to the file and since then I haven't been able to login to PCBSD.

Is there anything I can do to manually reset the file so I can at least get back into PCBSD? If there's no simple way, would a repair-install work?

At the PC-BSD ASCII screen, choose #4 and be quick, you only have 2 seconds

Once you get to a prompt <enter> for sh

Code:
mount -u /
mount -a
edit /etc/X11/XF86Config
do your thing, hit ESC and save the file and
Code:
reboot now

Thanks- worked nicely.

But I'm still with my original problem (which I only alluded to- your solution worked just fine!). I can't get the proper screen resolution/color depth.

My monitor (it's a laptop) has a native resolution of 1900x1200. I'm just trying to get any resolution that has the same aspect ratio but no matter what I do the XF86Config file, I'm always left with 4:3 options.

Also, is there anyway to get from 24bit colors to 32bit?

I wish I could help...maybe someone with a laptop will come along and give us both a clue.

Bah, I'll stick with the default drivers since I could get widescreen for now. Hopefully I'll be able to use the NVIDIA ones in the future so I can test games.

Thanks for your help.

Have you tried the nVidia drivers in ports? Much later than the PBI ones and there is also an nvidia-xconfig too, along with an nvidia-settings. I'm on a CRT and when I run the nvidia-xconfig and rebooted it didn't give me a 1400x1050 but I can choose that using the nvidia-settings from ports (or I can modify the XF86Config file but I found it nice that the nvidia-settings let me do it through a GUI interface).

I would, but I keep getting an error.

Something about a checksum mismatch when I use Kports.

I'm not a techy person on such things, but I've been told that theres no difference between the 24-bit and 32-bit color.

At least, the person said the 8-bit difference was Alpha channel or some thing not regluar colors. I sure havn't noticed any color loss lol.

I can't see a difference (between Windows and PCBSD) but I was trying out games with Wine and Morrowind said I need 32bit.

Try using the ports instead of kports. First, go to /usr/ports/distfiles and remove anything that has to do with nvidia.
