Default Including more archiving formats in base release.
I've just been stuffing about trying to make a package that INSISTS that the package unzip is installed. Then I thought ....

Zip is an essential OS ingredient. It just is.

What about including support for a wider variety of archive formats in the default release of PC-BSD. I just did a pkg_add -r zip, and now Ark is very happy to play ball with zip files. If we are supplied with an Ark, how about putting some animals in it?

How about Zip, Rar, 7zip, and probably Ace (depending on license/availablity/functionality).

(I suppose .zoo fits in with the silly Biblical reference I made above)

Any comments? Thanks.

I agree with you, integrating a support for more archive formats in the base release doesn't take a lot of space and is useful.

It appears that the 7zip format can't be handled by Ark (why???). There is p7zip, the command line version of 7zip for Unix (supports 7z, ZIP, CAB, RAR, ARJ, GZIP, BZIP2, Z, TAR, CPIO, RPM and DEB, says the website).

Rar is non-free so can't be integrated in the base release (maybe we can make a .pbi). For ACE I don't know. But Zip and 7Zip are free formats, and at least .zip support should be included.

I remember there was an alternative for WinAce ( but a non shareware app ).
I can't remember what the developer's website was. But it had a decent library set. I remember needing it to open up pk3 ( Quake ) files and the like. Closer to WinRar in functionality than WinAce, but it had a very extensive file list.

If anyone can track down the developer, then that would be wonderful.

Holy cow!
I tried it on WinZip and suddenly my drive opened during mid copy and spit out the QuakeIII CD like Xena's chakram. Almost took out the neighbour's dog.

And I'm pretty sure I saw blue smoke coming from the back of the CPU.

This was back when I was still running Win98 on a PII with 64Mb ram
I needed something with less eyecandy and more resource friendly usage.
