Are you sure it installed okay? The installation process should have taken 30 minutes or so. Sometimes, if the partition format doesn't work right, it will flash by and looked like it installed when, in fact, nothing was copied to the hard drive.

I would burn a new CD, using the slowest possible write speed (4x or 8x). Then re-try the installation, watching carefully when you select the partition and while it finally installs.

Maybe he didn't select "Install PCBSD bootloader"

Check out the free bootloader GAG. It will save you the trouble

My SOP (Standard Operating Proceedure) is to check the md5 checksum then burn at slowest speed (x8 for my drive).

Unless it's a quick data disk or MP3 cd then I'll go in the 20-40 times range, backups I do usually between 8x and 16x.

The more important the content the slower I burn it.

The md5 checksum makes sure that the file you downloded matches the file that is on the server. It runs some mathematical tests on the file and returns a number. Compare this to the number posted on the web site with the correct md5. If the two match, then you can be certain the file didn't get corrupted in the download.

Personally, I don't worry too much about that, although the check is trivial to do. I can't say as I have ever had a mismatched md5 checksum.
