I'm struggling to install VMware Tools in PC-BSD. I'm using VMWare 4.5.

I've managed to unpack the tools packages and run the install script which went fine, however on reboot I get the following error:

PCBSD kdm[575]: X server for display :0 can't be started, session disabled

If I then log into the console as root and type startx I get the following errors:

xauth: (argv):1: bad display name "PCBSD.localhost:0" in "list" command
xauth: (stdin):1: bad display name "PCBSD.localhost:0" in "add" command

/usr/libexec/ld-elf.so.1: Shared object "libxpg4.so.2" not found, required by "X"

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi - I use PC-BSD in vmware all the time and have used it in both versions 4.5 and 5.whatever.

The answer is - don't install the VMware tools. I'm not sure where, but if you can not reset the machine to a previous state, look around or search for the vmware tools remover. That MIGHT fix it.

Thanks for your response - sadly not quite the one I'd hoped.

Does this mean there are fundamental incompatabilities or does it mean there are components not installed that are expected of the VMWare FreeBSD tools.

Shall try and remove this weekend - fortunatly it's the very first thing I did so a rebuild might be quicker!
