problems with sound card

i get the following error when i try to play anything with my sound card on pc-bsd 1.2..... Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such file or directory)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.

In my expierence this usually means an un-supported sound card or the need of a driver.

If you have an emu10k (some creative labs) chip set we have a driver PBI that reduces setup for many newer Sound Blasters.

What type of sound card is it btw?

my sound card....which is on the motherboard not a pci slot....here is what it says on the chip...

the P in the last line is circled and so is the C...

i have a compaq presario model # 5BW160 that im running pc-bsn on ...

can u give me a site where i may get a driver for my ess allegro for pc-bsd...

If the file /boot/loader.conf contains the line snd_load="YES" on your system I beleive it's trying all the drivers that their are to work with that sound card.

the line sound_load="YES" in /boot/loader.conf tells the system try to and load all installed sound drivers during boot.

As far as I know the only stable hardware drivers not included in PC-BSD are those found here which is not really aimed at sound cards.

yes, I have an ESS Allegro too, just do the steps that the previous poster stated and you should have ur sound back.

I have the same problem as the first post in this string. the emu10k or emu10x drivers don't work, no connection of soundcard period. I loaded SuSE 10 on same machine and it loaded a snd_ca0106 module over the other two I stated, but that module isn't in Freebsd as far as I know. Is there a way to port over that module?

I'm also getting this message when pcdbsd first loads up (although I swear the very first time I used it after install, there was intro music...):

I'm also getting this (are they related?):

During the previous startup, KNotify crashed while creating Arts:ispatcher.
Do you want to try again or disable aRts sound output?

If you choose disable aRts output now, you can re-enable it later or select an alternate sound player in the System Notifications control panel.

I just clicked "try again" and not "disable".

I've tried playing an MP3 in both Kaffeine and xmms to no avail.

This is just my laptop for messing around/learning, that's why pcbsd is on it (not a trustworthy machine...) but for additional info, it's a Toshiba Satellite A15-S129. Googling says it takes the ADI WDM Audio Driver for Windows XP/2000.

Any ideas?
