Default Four CD device icons listed on "Computer" with two
After installing the 1.11 patch i Got:

cd0
cd1
acd0
acd1

I have only two drives, a DVD-Ram drive and a CD-RW drive.

Hard drive and floppy entries are ok.

It looks like there are some spare entries in /etc/fstab concerning the cdroms.

I've had it with this crap eversince Mandrake 9. The operating system detects two cdroms and places the proper entries in fstab. Then the window manager (KDE or Gnome) comes and enters its own interpretation of the system devices in it's file manager, hence the double entries.

In my previous PCBSD 1.1 installation (long after I upgraded from 1.0) I could not mount the cd/dvd disk through Konqueror (device busy or not mounted or leave me alone) and had four cd/dvd entries as well (I have two DVD devices). I could however mount any cd/dvd from the console which made me extremely angry.

Yes this happens in gnome as well. I have all the normal icons in the file manager but I can't mount anything using the actual icons there. Going to the console works every time though. In gnome the problem appears on the DVD-reader drive which is occasionally reported as recorder device (go figure).

This is another classic example of a window manager causing interference to normal system operation. Why can't there be some window manager simple enough to use only the resources that the underlying operating system detects and configures. Maybe I ought to search more...

i think this is not the problem.

Infact, deleting all the drive entries and links on "computer/drives" makes only two drives appear after boot.

I think Kris renamed the drives. somehow, the old configuration remained.

This should happen only when updating from 1.0, not installing from scrach.

This is a result of atapicam being loaded, then an application attempting to use the scsi designators of 'cd'. Some optical drive applications require that the drives be scsi (or at least look they are).

cd0 and cd1 are the "scsi emulation" versions of acd0 and acd1

put a mountable disk in acd0, mount it, look at contents, unmount disk, mount cd0, look at contents
contents are the same (it's the same drive)
