Default DVDROM not detected
The DVDROM on my system shows up as a CDROM. A CD formatted volume inserted in the device will mount, but a DVD formatted volume will not mount.

You show that you have two optical drives; one is a cd writer, the other is the dvd-rom.

Just a minor thought here, some dvd-rom drives are particular about what format the disk is in. A UDF or Juliet formatted disk will usually mount without issue, however, a disk that was used as a "backup" (sometimes formatted to match the operating system) has to be mounted by specifying the filesystem used (such as with mount_msdosfs or by using mount_auto). Your problem may be that the dvd is not be compatible with the cd9660 filesystem that is default for CDs and DVDs.

Try using mount_auto to manually mount the disk.

Default RE:DVDROM not detected
I'll try that. It's a Knoppix DVD. Fstab fstype for Linux is "auto".

mount_auto won't work, either. I've tried DVDs:
Knoppix, Debian Sarge, RedHat 5.x, Fedora Core 4.

"PCBSD# mount_auto /dev/acd1
mount: Insufficient permissions, unknown filesystem, or media not inserted
PCBSD#" (as root)

Fstab contents:

# Device Mountpoint FStype Options Dump Pass#
/dev/ad1s3b none swap sw 0 0
/dev/ad1s3a / ufs rw 1 1
/dev/ad0s1 /mnt/ad0s1 auto rw,noauto 0 0

"mount_auto /dev/acd1" is insufficient
you left out the mountpoint

there are two (2) ways to mount:
1) mount_auto /mnt/dir (/mnt/dir must be in /etc/fstab)
2 mount_auto /dev/device0 /mnt/dir

when specifying device during mount, you have to give a mountpoint

Your'e right. I wasn't thinking clearly. Here are attempts as user and as root:

%mount_auto /dev/acd1 /mnt/acd1
mount: Insufficient permissions, unknown filesystem, or media not inserted
%su
Password:
PCBSD# mount_auto /dev/acd1 /mnt/acd1
mount: Insufficient permissions, unknown filesystem, or media not inserted
PCBSD#

have you tried
mount_cd9660 /dev/acd1 /mnt/acd1

if this is a "live cd", it's possible that it's in ext2fs format
ext2fs is not installed on freebsd by default, you have to install
sysutils/e2fsprogs for freebsd to read/write ext2fs
