Fatal Trap 12 - how to fix
Dear all,
I posted some time ago about a Fatal Trap 12 on my laptop preventing me from starting PC BSD.
Since then I tried just using FreeBSD 6.0 and managed to get it working - ACPI is the key, as fatal trap 12 doesn't appear when ACPI is used in install or during normal usage.
The problem in PC BSD is that, although you get to choose the boot mode when installing from the CD (the FreeBSD screen with the 8 boot up options) you don't get the same options when you load the system up after install. Which means you don't get the option to enable ACPI...and hence the system falls over and dies before it's even started.
Is there anyway to access this menu? Is there anyway to modify the installation (or modify a file after install) so that ACPI is enabled automatically??
If we can find this then it will probably solve a lot of people's problems with Fatal Trap 12.
Dan :-)

There's no ACPI options in my BIOS...probably to stop the thing melting.

I described here, how to disable ACPI on boot.

Actually, disabling ACPI is not the way to go.
My laptop will only run PCBSD with ACPI enabled, otherwise I get a fatal trap 12. I've enabled it by using the command prompt on start up and typing:
|
Quote:
|
OK load acpi.ko
OK boot
|
Now I just need to figure out how to make it do that automatically...[/quote]

Add line to /boot/loader.conf:
