Default Mkdir permission denied
Hi,

I am new with linux, I choosed PC-BSD cause FreeBSD was a bit to complex for me. I am trying to setup a web server for test purpose.

I am trying to install apache, I follow the step but when I try to do "make install" it can't create any directory, mkdir permission are denied.

I am under KDE with the default user I created during the installation, I tryed to login as root, but it tell me I can't login as root.

What should I do ?

Thank for helping a newbie

Hi. By default you can NOT log into KDE as root user. If you wish to search these forums, there are tips on how to allow graphical root login, but I would DEFINATELY NOT take this option, at least until you are confident enough to know better : )

To do a "make install" you will need root access to the file system. You can perform console commands as root by opening "konsole" and entering "su", then it will ask you for the root password. If you then enter "whoami" (who am I) the console should then say "root". Anything you do in this terminal screen will then be executed as root user.

Right - the gist of it is that in order to install software, you have to be root. You'll find a "root" console window hidden away in the KDE menu, System->More Applications->Konsole Super User. Or you can just do 'su' from any regular console window.

But first you should check out the http://www.pbidir.com - there is an Apache 2.0 PBI there, and it is a much easier install. When looking for an application to install in PC-BSD, follow these steps:

1] Check PBIDIR.com
2] Ask on the forums to see if anyone is making a PBI
3] Check FreeBSD.org's list of ports. It is almost certainly there

Of course, to use Ports, you have to set it up first. If unclear, ask here and we can get you going. You almost never have to install something for FreeBSD from a direct download.
