Screens sequence
To sum up our previous discussion, these should be the steps of the installer. Please bear in mind that we still can change the order of these steps, your feedback is mostly welcome
|

2. Welcome screen
3. Install/Repair/Update/Shell
4. Select keyboard layout
5. Choose between laptop or desktop (to turn on/off numlock)
6. Select screen display¹
7. BSD License agreement
BASIC INSTALLATION (or skip to Advanced Installation)
1. Start installation
ADVANCED INSTALLATION
1. Show disk partitions
2. Custom partitioning
a) Root directory
b) Home (Disk space, same/different HDD)
c) SWAP (Disk space, same/different HDD)
3. Network configuration
a) NICs + IPs
b) hostname
c) Use a gateway?
d) Act as a gateway?
e) Add DNS servers
f) Samba group name
4. Firewall²
5. Start installation
CONFIGURATION
1. Timezone (nearest city) + Date and time
2. Set root password
3. System user
a) Username
b) Password
4. Choose configuration profile (presets + pre-install KDE software) |
I think that's about it
¹ Choose between 800x600 and 1024x768. Advanced button offers other resolutions (1280x1024, 1600x1200, etc...)
² Has a skip button

Re: Screens sequence
Charles, looks like a great list to me, however:
Change language should be 1 instead of 3. It's best to get that sorted as the first order of business otherwise people might not understand the other screens correctly.
I'd also be happier if we replaced 'Install' in section two with 'Advanced Install' and added 'Basic Install (default)' which would skip a large amount of the following behaving much like our current installer and choosing the most generic options.

I think Solarin is right. we should keep our current easy installation while adding an advanced installation option.

looks beter Charles, but i'd like to see some extra options on the advanced installer.
1 - The ability to choose where to place the swap file outside the system hd (in a separate hd i mean)
2 - the ability to choose where to place the home folder outside the system hd.
This is looking better every day mate

I was thinking about it: What if we had presets per country? For instance if I select "Japan", PC-BSD auto-fills for me the time, timezone, keyboard layout and language? (The user would still let the option to change those presets)
What do you think?

One can be Portuguese, like PC-BSD in Portuguese and live in Japan.
Having it preset is ok but i'd like to be able to modified if i need to.
Also, being able to determine where is my home folder is a must have. I am sure i posted about this before as well.
I was thinking... we cannot use the BSD partitioning tool because of the mft bug so... Can we use another tool? Or does it need to have a BSD license?
