I think which fonts look better is a matter of personal taste. Anti-aliased and smoothed fonts are less sharp, but one does not see the pixels that one would otherwise see. I personally prefer the anti-aliased ones, but obviously others disagree.

I think it's not a matter of aliased or anti-aliased, it's a matter of which one is better for certain fonts. I have posted a message on the BSD Forums regarding this issue.

There are fonts at certain sizes that look better aliased, and others that look better antialiased at other sizes.

Here's a ~/.fonts.conf file that defines these rules pretty much the same way as on Windows. I think for instance that Verdana 11px looks better aliased, and Times New Roman 22px looks better anti-aliased.

Here's the name of the file: ~/.fonts.conf, when there is ~, it means the home directory, so if your home directory is /home/manfred, then copy this file there, and rename it with a "." in front of it so that it's a hidden file and X.org catches it

Maybe you forgot to change the name of the fonts in the K Control Center.. Also, you need to turn off anti-aliasing there too
