Unhappy Freebsd-update FAILS
Running pc-bsd v 9.0 on Freebsd-rc3 64bit. New install!

Problem: The first time I updated with pc-bsd and then freebsd-update all went well (key was downloaded fine etc.). I then rebooted and now I can not update via freebsd-update I get can't find mirrors and then seeks and seeks server defined (update.freebsd.org and then I tried ftp2.us.freebsd.org) - then fails to prompt.

I believe can still update via pc-bsd update gui just fine!

What is up? Just rebooted and tried again and not worky?

Default Freebsd-update FAILS
Can you post output of "uname -a"?

Also, whats the exact command you are trying with "freebsd-update"?

Same issue here, but I'm on Stable version:

Code:
 ~> uname -r -m -s
FreeBSD 9.0-STABLE amd64
Code:
 ~> uname -a
FreeBSD amy-jade 9.0-STABLE FreeBSD 9.0-STABLE #0: Wed Jun 27 16:45:22 EEST 2012 AnbuBlack@amy-jade:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/KERNELASUSX59GL amd64
The command for update that I used is:

Code:
#freebsd-update fetch install
and the result returned is:

Code:
Looking up update.FreeBSD.org mirrors... 3 mirrors found.
Fetching metadata signature for 9.0-STABLE from update5.FreeBSD.org... failed.
Fetching metadata signature for 9.0-STABLE from update4.FreeBSD.org... failed.
Fetching metadata signature for 9.0-STABLE from update3.FreeBSD.org... failed.
No mirrors remaining, giving up.
I've changed the mirrors but the result is the same.

kmoore134 thank you for the quick reply.

Reply:
# uname -srp

# sudo freebsd-update fetch

Fetching metadata signature for 8.2-RELEASE from update5.FreeBSD.org... none.
Failed.
#

No other change has been made except for:
1- adding PF logging and a few rules so to rule this out I did a pfctl -d prior - add looked at blocked logs.
2- tried adding to freebsd-update.conf a different server:
# ServerName update.freebsd.org
ServerName ftp2.us.freebsd.org

In short it worked and then I rebooted and now it doesn't? I can look more into the fw or maybe is it a key?

Any help appreciated thanks.

Default RE: Freebsd-UPdate
I'm wondering if its looking up an invalid tag. What about if you run:

freebsd-update upgrade -r 9.0-RELEASE

Question Freebsd-update FAILS
Ran the command as advised and got the following:
$ sudo freebsd-update upgrade -r 9.0-RELEASE
freebsd-update: Cannot upgrade from 9.0-RELEASE to itself

Correction on the uname command:
$ uname -a
FreeBSD host 9.0-RELEASE-p3 FreeBSD 9.0-RELEASE-p3 #0: Tue Jun 12 02:52:29 UTC 2012 root@amd64-builder.daemonology.net:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/GENERIC amd64

RE: Freebsd-UPdate
I'm wondering if its looking up an invalid tag. What about if you run:

freebsd-update upgrade -r 9.0-RELEASE
IT WORKED!!!! BUT WITH A HITCH STILL NEED HELP!!!!!!
When I changed the servername to the original server used the first time I ran update = update3.freebsd.org it worked.

Command ran
Quote:
sudo freebsd-update -s update3.freebsd.org fetch
Looking up update3.freebsd.org mirrors... none found.
Fetching metadata signature for 9.0-RELEASE from update3.freebsd.org... done.
Fetching metadata index... done.
Inspecting system... done.
Preparing to download files... done.

No updates needed to update system to 9.0-RELEASE-p3.
ISSUE IS FOUND HERE IN RED:
Quote:
sudo freebsd-update fetch
Looking up ftp1.us.freebsd.org mirrors... none found.
Fetching metadata signature for 9.0-RELEASE from ftp1.us.freebsd.org... failed.
No mirrors remaining, giving up.
Proof that I am getting through my firewall TCPDUMP:
Quote:
host.domain > host.22747: [udp sum ok] 21707 q: PTR? 73.184.152.204.in-addr.arpa. 1/0/0 73.184.152.204.in-addr.arpa. [1h] PTR freebsd.isc.org. (74)

REQUEST SOLUTION:How can I change the servername to "ftp1.us...whatever" and succeed getting signature to update as needed? So it seems to be a failure of the new "metadata signature" to the new servername defined after a successful update.

Wink
See this post same issue with a solution to try:

Okay, I've solved the problem I'm having with freebsd-update. Hopefully this can help the OP.

http://forums.freebsd.org/showthread.php?t=28992
While running freebsd-update I got this error message:
Quote:
Code:
$ sudo freebsd-update fetch
Looking up update.FreeBSD.org mirrors... none found.
Fetching metadata signature for 9.0-RELEASE from update.FreeBSD.org... invalid signature.
No mirrors remaining, giving up.
The solution:
My DNS server is dnsmasq. In dnsmasq.conf the option "filterwin2k" was enabled. When I commented it out and restarted dnsmasq the problem went away. Other DNS servers may have options similar to "filterwin2k" in dnsmasq. If you can't modify the configuration on the DNS server you're using, just try using another DNS server.
Give this a try... So how or where or why do I change this on a desktop or not for a non-dns box?

Yes I did not read well, my mistake:

Quote:
The freebsd-update tool is used to fetch, install, and rollback binary updates to the FreeBSD base system. Note that updates are only available if they are being built for the FreeBSD release and architecture being used; in particular, the FreeBSD Security Team only builds updates for releases shipped in binary form by the FreeBSD Release Engineering Team, e.g., FreeBSD 6.1-RELEASE and FreeBSD 6.2-RC1, but not FreeBSD 6.2-STABLE or FreeBSD 7.0-CURRENT.
to keep an update to STABLE should use csup/cvsup.

Thank you for corrected my mistake.
