Default The new "Linux in a jail" feature of 9.1
Hi all

I'm interested in the "Linux in a jail" feature because I hope it will be enough Linux for me. However, I'd like to find out what disadvantages the Linux system would encounter when running in a jail, compared to setting up a dual-boot arrangement.

To be more specific - and I hope this is not a stupid question: The only time I envision specifically wanting Linux is for music recording if I run into latency problems with the BSD kernel. Does the jail arrangement mean that I am still relying on the BSD kernel with its (theoretically) greater potential for latency - or does the Linux kernel have the necessary access to the hardware while running "behind bars"? [again, I hope my question is not ridiculous - I don't know all the details and am going by what I have read.]

Thanks
David

In this case I think you would still need to dual-boot. A jail is still
running the BSD kernel, so you don't have access to any Linux-specific
kernel stuff.

Makes sense, and kind of what I expected to hear.

For now I am going to go ahead with PC-BSD and see what happens, because I like it and haven't (yet) run into any real-world problem with it.

Thanks.
