Default No Sound
No sound in PC-BSD 9.0.

Mixer:

Mixer vol is currently set to 100:100
Mixer pcm is currently set to 26:26
Mixer speaker is currently set to 75:75
Mixer line is currently set to 50:50
Mixer mic is currently set to 42:42
Mixer rec is currently set to 75:75
Mixer igain is currently set to 100:100
Mixer ogain is currently set to 100:100
Mixer monitor is currently set to 100:100
Recording source: mic

cat /dev/sndstat:

FreeBSD Audio Driver (newpcm: 64bit 2009061500/amd64)
Installed devices:
pcm0: <HDA NVidia (Unknown) PCM #0 DisplayPort> (play)
pcm1: <HDA NVidia (Unknown) PCM #0 DisplayPort> (play)
pcm2: <HDA NVidia (Unknown) PCM #0 DisplayPort> (play)
pcm3: <HDA NVidia (Unknown) PCM #0 DisplayPort> (play)
pcm4: <HDA VIA VT1818S PCM #0 Analog> (play/rec) default
pcm5: <HDA VIA VT1818S PCM #1 HDMI> (play)
pcm6: <HDA VIA VT1818S PCM #2 Digital> (play)

I have cycled through pcm 0 to 6 using command sysctl hw.snd.default_unit=x where x=0 - 6 while playing music on Grooveshark.

Still no sound. Sound does not "just work".

Please provide additional diagnostics or settings I can adjust. On-board sound.
Speaker is wired correctly; it works fine with Fedora and operating systems change is merely a swap of hard drives.

Very much appreciate your thoughts. Would like to get sound; without sound it is difficult justify staying with PC-BSD.

Rise up pcm from 26 to 80 or 100 and use analog pcm (default).

Thank you for the suggestions.

Setting pcm to 100 had no effect. If I read the cat /dev/sndstat output correctly, I am using analog output.

Could it be a Phonon issue? In the cat /dev/sndstat output it is clear the system sees two audio options - the video card and onboard sound. However in Phonon only one device appears. Seems like I should have two again.

In openSuse, another distribution using the KDE desktop and Phonon, two devices appear in Phonon as expected. They are clearly identified and not merely labeled default. I believe this is my issue. Not sure how to fix. Great to know if I elect to go back to PC-BSD.
