Desktops
There is no inherent reason why PC-BSD shouldn't run other desktops besides KDE or Linux binaries. UNIX runs thousands of different applications already. A few dozen more plus a few desktops shouldn't make a difference. Heck, BSD can run virtual machines which run entire operating systems !!! To say otherwise is just purity for its own sake & not related to performance or stability. Of course native UNIX applications don't always behave themselves either. Just browse this forum if you are skeptical.

We know. For those that need reference:

But remember we are *nix, hehehe, the bsd child. (the trademark thing)

why I say customize only until you can do 30 chats and a call in two minutes, without asking for help.

The Luky one
Hi! My best regards :
Well i'm a Windows7 power user since 1999 year i pouchased my first descktop HP it was top line i don't remember the model.
But always buy for Windows HP computers with nvidia and AMD because you can make all with the hardware and bios are automatic and unblocked.
By other way i use Mac for my work and the all hardware are locked and triky to modifing parameters only admits replasements from apple an in exactly model and "unknowing" brand ...???
My Point :
Mac always work stable and trustwortly if these word are well used.
but wit the cost of these machines i get the most super machine in the pc market for me HP.
The big reason!!! Microsoft Windows ... works fantastic and amazing out the box....but with time and use. the pc always fail somethig corrupt files virus hackers its blow down itself in some time the windows os destroy hardware mostly HDD's . and latest wusa updates bother with the bios machine. brake the owner of machine or SMART HDD's corrupt archive ...try to test UEFI capability on old pc's ...
AND.. i errase my hdd totaly mbr all. and push a PC_BSD 9 x64dvd in to hp desktop and install
Pc-Bsd 9 zfs file sys kde almost all in default mode. only i had care to read two times all window from installer. because i never use linux or unix before.mac does no a pure unix sys is diferent ... well
I wait a 37:10 min to complete the installer and. ask the installer help what is next and say put dvd out and clik finish to reboot.
Next all show fast and shinny put my user credentials and bump may desk i wait 20 min before to do anything and i expend some time to reed Hand book pdf in my screen.
then i note some things not respond like panel control... and i think.. maybe a new automatic app are need to restart the system and its because i use a hi end hp machine. i think 16 gigs ram 2 nvidia graphics 4 21 inch lcd monitors two hd sound cards and 320 hdd plus 2 hdd 1 tera on internal raid... i figure the BSD OS needs to reboot and i rebooted.
Next mor fast an furious OS i seen some new windows apear to configure screen touch and monitors and start perfect
Perfect. by only a a glich "default sound card" the sys choose laptop parameters. and incude "uncoment" for my advanced devises so.... i go to foruns reed some and put off the machine statr again and... coose a root instead my user. and maque all changes on syctl document edit "uncoment" referenses and put the chanels i want to use and type all the changes i reead before.
Close all and put off the machine.
In the 20 minuts i start the HP on my user acoun on PC-BSD 9
And all works like charm. no problems no freese and no worry for nothing. i use the bsd 9 sinse december 2011 9 monts so far and is solid like a rock.
App Cafe letme install Opera Cromium Firefox etc
to use a media player with soun cuality i us Audacious i try all on the list it is the best if you configure it, so i'm happy new user and never give me a big heache like windows7 .and
I can say never in the future will need a Microsoft stuff.
With respect forgive me for my bad English and my type errors i'm not a English native.
Cheers!

i have found that it does not seem to matter sometimes what OS is being installed, what does matter is the hardware configuration and -if if if- the OS picks up everything right... more times then not it's a hardware conflict (something in the Bios) (most likely a driver conflict with bios) if it takes forever to load in...(and ZFS 64bit-don't use it next time) i would start with a default hardware bios setup with everything turned basically off... and then work from there if i'm having OS install problems. I'm a hardware tech and have done hundreds of installs, seems to always come down to something stupid in the bios to muck things up...Also i might mention DVD drives, they can fail, without showing it and cause driver and OS muck ups (on fresh install)... i would suggest disconnection of the DVD drive temporary as well to eliminate hardware/ driver issues this can cause. (has happened many many times-bad dvd drive), you also did not mention the computer your attempting to install on.
Hope all this helps!
Tooo many OS's and Toooo many types of computers = don't always work

I have recently installed pcbsd and except for one flaw that I can't get help with, I really like it. There is trouble with every OS that I have tried. Linux Mint does not hold an internet connection although it is easy to reconnect. My old favorite pclinuxos now sometimes gives me the bottom panel and sometimes doesn't. K9copy wont work with Mepis which is generally very reliable. Ubuntu has always been flawed for me and I do not know why it is so popular.
My main problem with pcbsd is that it does not recognize my Brother printer and the only drivers that I can get are .rpm and .deb. I just switch to another OS when I want to print. I have not yet figured out how to use the Iron browser with pcbsd although it should be possible.

Have you added the HPLIP system meta package? (control panel -> system manager -> system packages tab -> hardware drivers -> HPLIP) This includes the printer information to configure *many* printer brands and models.

If there were such a thing as a perfect OS we would all be using it. The closest you will get to perfection is the one you enjoy using.
I personally like PCBSD and think it is an amazing young and thriving project. Yes it has "quirks", but I think this adds to the overall enjoyment of the experience.
I used to use Slackware, another great project, but I was looking for something more. PCBSD does it for me, and, besides which I am a fan of the BSD license.
Regards

printers.
Printers can be a challenge. For Brother, how do you connect?
If its wireless, you have to plug the printer in with USB first. Then run updates.
After that, add the printer again with wireless. The reason is so the proper drivers are installed.
If the printer can accept Ethernet, try it that way. Just make sure you know the IP address.
You might have to get the FreeBSD drivers compiled from source as a last resort.

Wasting time...
Ext4 is a Linux filesystem, not a UNIX one. Neither one can read the other's filesystem for all practical intents and purposes. If you are invested in ext4, Linux is mandatory.
KDE isn't a lightweight desktop. Of course it will be a little bit slower then others.
Xfce can be a little bit buggy sometimes. Try LXDE instead. You can also just use Open Box if you like a minimalist environment.
App Cafe can update PBI apps you install. Its not the system updater. To do that, open a terminal as root.
Type 2 commands. Let one finish completely before running the next one.
freebsd-update fetch
freebsd-update install
You will find that memory use is far less intense when running from a terminal.
Having said all that, Mint is very nice. If it works for you and your hardware, I'm sure you'll be pretty happy with it. If you don't mind running around cyberspace looking for media codecs, try Fedora. Like PC-BSD, it can encrypt your whole partition if this is a concern.
