On PC-BSD, I ran into an "interesting" issue with USB as well, but in my situation it is easily avoided. What I did was attempt to use a USB-to-ether network device plugged into my USB port along with my USB keyboard and mouse. This confused things and lost use of the keyboard/mouse. (I sidestepped the issue by not using the network item.)

In NetBSD, when used on the same pc, the keyboard is not auto-detected or has some issue during boot of the NetBSD installer. If I remove and re-connect the keyboard, I get a message on console that muddles the screen formatting temporarily, but the keyboard is functional and recognized.

And back to FreeBSD, perhaps there are some sysctl or device hints which could potentially solve this issue which vaguely sounds like a conflict/collision. However, I am no expert and only try to guess.. and add my own experience with similar oddness.

as an update.. using the second motherboard I had found an old ps/2 keyboard and mouse - did a cdrom boot to avoid the usb issue.. while I did not see the usb errors, the install did fail at the same place as before complaining about not finding any cd device to boot..

anyway.. went into the bios and totally disabled the on-board usb, and bingo - the system started booting off the dvd.

I then put in a generic pci usb card I had lying around, just to see what happens (plus the old ps/2 mouse sucks).. it's a rosewill brand, uses a nec chipset.. plugged in my usb mouse, booted to the dvd - mouse came on and was detected and install went off without a hitch.

the problem is definitely with the nvidia chipset's usb.. tried disabling usb 2.0 and legacy usb mode to no avail, only completely disabling the onboard usb would allow it to boot.

Thumbs up
I'm trying to think of how this could be added to a troubleshooting section of the wiki, in such a way that the problem and circumstance/hardware would be properly described/identified, and a solution (or two) given.

Yes, we could say that nvidia based USB hub controllers along with a USB keyboard/mouse may have trouble with detection, and that a solution is to disable the onboard USB controller? In one sense, this seems like a hammer to swat a fly solution, but it works.. there may be a more precise/elegant way to solve this perhaps via sysctl or device hints. Unfortunately I don't know exactly how that answer would look. I only say this because not everyone may happen to have a spare USB controller card or even PS2 ports.

Ideas?

Default USB error?
Hey All,

:Sorry, missed the "NEXT PAGE" in the bottom right corner. (No delete available and erasure of ramblings even more foolish.):

When originally installing 7.0, ran into a similar problem initially. Turned out that the BIOS was set to check for k-board and mouse. Reset to keyboard-less, mouse-less and diskette-less, plugged in USB wireless keyboard and PASSED, until it got to the keyboard installation...

As to 9.X, using XP and LGs PowerGo2, erased, created bootable DVD, then downloaded 9.X DVD live 32. Saved iso to harddisk (desktop) and when verify finished burned a bootable data DVD. Where the 7.0 stopped, 9.0 had no issues, it even recognized the vanilla brand MS Media Center keyboard with no issues...

Looking over the bootlog for some reason your USB devices are not responding to the init query. It may be that your BIOS may need to be toggled wrt the USB or keyboard settings. I noticed no discussion wrt your BIOS so curious if you have explored that option?

Cheers!
Dave Cooke
