The reason you had more plugins listed in Linux is because most Linux distributions just ship those plugins. It really has nothing to do with being Chrome vs Chromium.

As for the "apps"... Well what exactly are you trying to install and how are you trying to install it? I've installed any number of items from the Chrome Web Store in Chromium.

And back to WebGL.... Unfortunately, I do not know why it won't work for you in Chromium. I don't have supported hardware for it on PC-BSD, but I have had WebGL work in Chromium elsewhere.

Ah, I see, thanks. Well, then, I don't know. I'm just playing around with things anyway. If I get some time I'll make a list of things I run into and try to track down why those particular things don't work. Since it appears my browser seems to be normal, there must be some other issue.

But, alas, I must work. Boy, work really cuts into my play time.

Thanks guys, at least now I know things are as they should be.

I think some of the sites, like TurboTax for instance, detect the operating system and won't let you in. I wish web designers would let me decide for myself if the site works or not.

I'll ask Google what the deal is with WebGL.

Other than games, I can't find much that doesn't work, so I guess I'm just not used to Chrome with nothing installed. Clean and lean is probably a good thing.

Thanks for putting up with noobs.

It would be detecting the browser, if anything. If there was a plug-in for Chromium that would allow you to change its user agent, you could see if TurboTax was blocking the browser.

Ya know, you could just install Firefox. It's chubby but it works.

Come to the Dark Side, Luke.

Lol.

Well, I like the clean simplicity of the Chrome UI, and a lot of the stuff I do is Google related.

So, I did manage to get WebGL to work. The wording of the WebGL flag is kind of odd:

WebGL
Disable WebGL.
Enable

So to enable the disabling of WebGL you would click Enable. Hmmm, ok.

I noticed it when I did chrome://version and it showed the various command-line parameters that were enabled, and one said "--disable-webgl". By clicking Enable under flags I was actually disabling WebGL.

So, TurboTax says:

"Please make sure your computer meets the TurboTax Online system requirements.
To ensure you have the best possible experience using TurboTax Online, your computer must meet the system requirements below."

Actually not true, and one of my pet peeves with some web developers. I'll decide if it's working for me, thank you very much.

The user string says:

"Chromium 17.0.963.46 (Developer Build 0)
OS FreeBSD"

Which probably explains TurboTax complaining:

"Using a BETA or development version of a browser or operating system?"

Anyway, it seems to have all come together, and my taxes are done (from Windows). And other websites that doesn't like my OS can bite me.

Have you tried this? http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/201...le-chrome.html That might fool TurboTax.

My problem is that Firefox (my browser of choice) looks like Chrome by default. I also use a lot of Google services, especially e-mail, searching and Google Shopping. The first thing that I do with new Firefox installations is change the interface to look like Firefox 3. I don't like minimalist interfaces when they interfere with ease-of-use. Of course, this is just my opinion.

It all depends on your particular use-case. You probably need more options than I do. I mostly just click the pretty icons on my bookmark bar. It's kind of like the age-old Kde vs Gnome argument.

I will give that a shot, just to see if I can fool the checks.

Thanks.

Not sure what they are checking. TT doesn't like FireFox or Chrome no matter what user agent I use.

Oh well, I don't have to worry about them for another year.

Thanks again.

Default Google Chrome
Last year I got turbotax working in FF on PC-BSD, but I had to use a
user-agent switcher, and change my OS to report as a Windows XP system.
I don't recall the specific plugin I used, but it did take editing some
user-agent strings manually to make it work

Well, thanks. Now I know it can be done. I'll play around with that again sometime.

I wish they would just pop up a warning:

"You're browser may not be compatible with this site. Proceed at your own risk."

Instead of just blocking me.
