Hi

This is my first post here but i'm using PCBSD since 1.0 RC1 was relaeased last week and i think it's a great system. Anyway, i've installed it on my laptop which works well with acpi but it's not the case with my pc (athlon XP 2800+ Barton 1GB ram nvidia GeForce 5600 XT with asus nf7sv2 motherboard). And it seems that a lot of people are complaining about their system not starting or freezing because of this acpi bug. I really don't understand why such a thing could happen. acpi works well on my pc even with old linux distros.

It was not easy to find how disabling it at boot time cause there is no boot menu unlike with classic FreeBSD 6. But i've found how to do it with google. I like PCBSD but i guess we should not hope attracting windows users or linux beginners yet...

Here is the solution :
when it boots, there is choice between typing enter to boot normally or another key to go on command prompt within 10 seconds. U just have to type another key and then on the command prompt :

unset acpi_load (enter)
boot

to disable acpi every time you boot your system, go in /boot/devives.hints, and add the line :

hint.acpi.0.disabled="1"

hope it will help.

Best regards
Alex

we should have a way to set the time before enter on the system manager.

And while we are at it, have also the chance to use or not to use the boot screen.

Sometimes, the boot screen is necessary. For some people even the time we have to pres enter could be set to zero.

Calm down my friend :wink:
We don't need these options 99% of the time
If you forget your root password, you can hit any key other than "Enter" at boot time and it'll open the console, just type passwd, and that's it.

If you want to disable ACPI, you most probably want to do it once for all. Edit /boot/devives.hints and add hint.acpi.0.disabled="1". Reboot and you'll ready to go
