i dont know the exact answer to that, but usually the stable releases attempt to actually be stable. so im guessing no. changing to multiple desktops will probably have a ton of interesting problems as it is. gnome 3 on initial release will probably be very buggy in the begining, to put it nicely. again i dont know, but i am guessing 9.1 may have it.

ive actually been meaning to get the 9.0 alpha installed to get caught up on some of the up coming changes. i'll try to do that in the next week or so

Actually I'm expecting 9.0 to include Gnome 3. We are still a ways off
from 9.0 being finalized, so there is plenty of times for it to hit the
FreeBSD ports tree and get included.

Considering how strong a change there is between Gnome 2.x and 3.0, maybe it would be a good idea to offer both? I'm sure that's not a very popular idea with the developers as it's more work, but Gnome 3 is quite new. It would be nice to avoid the early adoption issue so many projects ran into when KDE4 came out.

I'm not quite certain how this will play out yet. The gnome porting team
hasn't committed it to ports yet, so I don't know if they are going to
leave legacy gnome 2 stuff intact.
