Default On Hobble driver nvidia doesn't work
The Xinstaller works fine to select the correct driver for my videocard GeForce go 7300, 192.X.X but when it finish to install the package it turns to be an everlasting loophole reinitiating the system and open time after time the Xinstaller at last i've choosed the nv driver. I can't access to the messages from the X server to make a diagnosys that cause the before behaviour.

There is a solution? I've tried to compile it but a warning stops the compiling saying that the driver (the last one downloaded from the nvidia site) can't be compiled in this version (8) of FBSD some hints can be appreciated TIA

Have you tried a lower version of the nvidia binary? Latest is not necessarily the best.

Cool
If you mean a lower version of the driver compiled for the FBSD 8.0 and proportionated with the Hobble release i've tried them and it's the same stuff. They don't work. The same thing for the nvidia update. The outcome to install them it's a laptop freezed, more it needs to plug an external monitor to use the Xinstaller again to choose other driver in my laptop nv is the choosed one.

If you mean to use Galileo and its drivers, yes it works

If you've found a regression in the nvidia drivers the best possible
thing to do is report it to them, since we don't have direct control
over their stuff

A good place to start would be the nvidia forums, maybe search and post
your details:

http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=47

The guys at nvidia are cool, and usually get stuff fixed up pretty
quickly

This is the nvidia binaries that came with 7.1.1 (Galileo)

Software Specs
- FreeBSD 7.2-Stable
- KDE 4.2.4
- Xorg 7.4
- Nvidia Driver 185.18.14
- Nvidia Driver 173.14.18
- Nvidia Driver 96.43.11

Which one worked for you?

Fatmice, when I was using Galileo I was using the 185.18.14 then the update to 195.X.X , each release of the nvidia drivers is valid for a list of video cards so you need to know your nvidia video card and I surmise that you know that each driver is compiled to the kernel of the FBSD release so you can't use a driver from the FBSD 7 into FBSD 8 or what it's the same stuff from the Galileo into Hobble and I don't want to get back now to Galileo.

Actually in my case it not was a such necessity to update, Galileo worked great to me, but ... I don't hope very, very well doings in FBSD with the drivers and my laptop it's three years old so I can test freely, well my losses are that I can't use the GL Screensavers

This is true

This is not true. The driver is actually from linux but freebsd can use it due to kernel level translation that's built into freebsd kernel. The driver is also loaded during boot time...so obviously it's not built in, more like tagged onto. Essentially, when the kernel asks what will I do with this device? It gets answer that said, here load this and it has the answer. It is true that freebsd has its own agp.ko but that is supposed to be disabled for the nvidia's own agp.ko to work correctly. As long as your version of freebsd isn't CURRENT and the version is of the version required by the nvidia binary, you can do whatever.

You can still have it back if you remove the current nvidia library and replace it with the old version. It will just take a bit of typing =)

Here's the repository of all the nvidia binaries released for bsd and linux. I'm sure you are aware of it.

Well, Fatmice, so you are telling me that only use the old nvidia library with the new nvidia driver, the problem that i've tested the whole old driver and more oldies drives and they not works worse they can't be compiled, pop out a message telling that they are incompatible and bla, bla, bla in fact I have a lot of subfolders in my folder with them as in nvidia boxes preparing to the grand prix but.. well if the nvidia libraries can be extracted and installed for themselves I didn't know that. I'll try with mc its easy to do this.

I've tested the last driver too and it can be compiled but it freezes the laptop in the messages that i've could read it seems that the actual problem is a question of PATH, server X not find the libraries probably due to the changes made in Hobble to the general distribution of places or due that the instalation of the driver is in a place ignored for the X server, maybe the solution it's easier than we think or maybe not

I doubt it would be a path problem since then it would be widespread and affect many users.

There isn't anything to compile. Nvidia drivers are binaries already.

I don't really understand what you did.
