Default GUI Installer Failed
The nvidia drivers are now included with the 9.1-BETA1 images. It should
use nvidia during installation, and through the whole process.

Sounds like I have a similar problem. Just trying out PC-BSD 9 on an old Intel ca810e mobo and the install fails at the gui stage (screen cannot display whatever is being output to it). Vesa does not get around the problem. I had a go with earlier versions (8.2, 7.1.1) and they failed too. However, 1.5.1 does work and successfully installs with the default install setting (no need for vesa). Is there, perhaps, a file I can transplant from the 1.5.1 media to the 9 iso that will allow it to install?

btw, I've just tried the 9.1 beta and that's failing at the gui stage for me too...

bump

Any clues as to what was changed after 1.5.1 that causes my install (as noted above) to fail? Surely there must be something on the 9 installation media that can be modified to allow the gui to display correctly? No?

Default GUI Installer Failed
My guess would be that it's xorg or the FreeBSD vesa module itself
causing the issue. Perhaps something in the driver has changed and
messed this up?

Ah, interesting. Probably not worth the effort to chase this down, I suppose. If I'm gonna use PC-BSD it'll have to be on rather more compatible equipment!

Default GUI Installer Failed
Ahh yes, Optimus is known to not work at this time. Several threads
about this on the FreeBSD forums as well.

Thumbs down Failing at HP DM1-3251BR as well.... =|
Completely frustrating thing....the installer works good around my VirtualBox as a Virtual Machine, which includes nice GUI for Boot Loader Menu as well...however simply not able to make this work around my HP DM1-3251BR Laptop without too much tricky things around the shell...DM1-3251BR is relatively new machine(just bought as brand new almost one year ago) and has the follow configuration:

By the way...just would like to say I use FreeBSD since I was just a teen(had 16 - 17 years at that time), actually providing Administration Services here IBM for some OpenBSD/FreeBSD minor installations. but most of big ones i commonly handle are AIXes and Linux Systems, which means I really know how to compile from source...configure X Server from scratch: Xorg, XDM and the old XFree86...modprobe modules into the kernel....etc....however, what always make myself, and most of people who would like to start using FreeBSD at your own PCs as an alternative to Linux, regards Installation and configuration parts without spend days making the SO compatible with General Devices, present in almost 100% Desktop/Laptop Machines for sale recently.

I remember Linux just had the same problems quite 5-10 years ago(i.e.: Debian, RedHat, Mandrake, SCO-Caldera, etc..) and they have made a good progress on this part since then(maybe due tremendous focus on compatibility to gain marketshare).....PC-BSD really promises and makes me excited in see a reliable alternative to Linux Workstations coming up in a few years maybe, but I think PCBSD-Development Team shall be only able to achieve such objectives after provide same focus Linux has provided on that perspective as mentioned and try to come up with so much "compatibility" right-out-of-the-box as Linux atually does, in order to make REAL Workstation Users confident about SO Productivity......People that are more interested in "Productivity", despite of "Technology" and hard-command-line additional workarounds being necessary to make something relatively 'generic' just start working under PC-BSD. =/
