Doubts on UpdateManager

Hi all. Once again, I can't figure out how pcbsd update manager works. UpdateManager frame window still show me "System Up to date", but if I rescan for new ports manually and doing a "pkg_version -l '<' " I still see a lot of pkgs need to update. So what is wrong with it??

Update Manager checks for new PBIs. Ports are different from PBIs and usually are updated more often. You can safely update ports as long as you stay in Ports Console (Jail).

Correct, the Update Manager doesn't track all the installed ports which make up your desktop. It only gets updates that we specifically issue for security / bugfixes, etc. Otherwise you'd be getting port updates almost daily and be worrying about the latest libjpeg update breaking things :P

When we issue new versions of PC-BSD, like 8.0 -> 8.1, that's when all the base-system updates are done, so we can do better quality control over the hundreds of new apps / libs.

So, do I still use usually commands to carry out updates? I refer to:
# cvsup -L 2 /root/ports-supfile
# portsdb -Uu
# portversion -l “<”
# portupgrade -arR
# pkgdb -F

correct?

I guess you can do that as long as you work in the Ports Jail.

BTW,

portsnap fetch extract (only the first time)
portsnap fetch update

is faster than csup.

Also I'd recommend to look at portmaster vs portupgrade. Portmaster doesn't use Ruby and external database for packages. You don't have to fix that database periodically with pkgdb -F.
