Default Minimal (no "eye candy") install or turning "effects" off..
OK, so I guess people shied away from reading my previous post, probably because I was too specific in the title with the machine I was using. So maybe one of you moderator dudes can erase my previous post and just leave this one. (You can go ahead and delete this paragraph too if you like..

Hi all,

I am wondering if there is a way to custom-install PC-BSD 8, in order for it to run "smoothly" on an older machine (1.6GHz Centrino processor, 1GB RAM, 32MB ATI Mobility Radeon 7500). I don't really need any of the nice screen/window effects, just a nicely-running system where I can launch apps (Firefox, OpenOffice stuff) quickly.

If there is no way to do that, can someone let me know how to turn stuff like that off? Any recommendations for which video card driver I should be using?

Finally, I'm (obviously) using a laptop: where do I set it so that when I close the lid the computer goes into standby?

Thanks a lot,

Dany

Actually, you posted your support question in the wrong section of the forum. This section is call "Tips and Tricks", which is mainly for explaining how to do something and not for asking questions. Your question should have gone in the General Questions or Installing PC-BSD sections. You also might want to search or ask your question in the kde forums as well as they are a little more active than here.

However, you might want to try starting with Fireball (Start)/Favorites/System Settings click on Desktop and uncheck the Enable Desktop Effects box.

Correct, start -> system settings -> desktop is the best place to start
and turn off all eye-candy

True, but it really doesn't have any text, so I just call it start, old
school that way

the start menu is only on windows.
so unless you manage to get the windows explorer to run on FreeBSD it's still kickoff.... :P

hm, come to think of it, the windows explorer may actually work with wine...
