Default Desktop environment
Hello all,

I've been wanting to try pcbsd and was wondering if it comes, by default, with only KDE? I have a Thinkpad T41 that is nearing 9 years old and environments like KDE and Gnome are a little much for it. If KDE is all that installs by default, is it relatively easy to get a hold of, say, openbox, xfce, etc?

I looked around the pcbsd site for this info but couldn't find anything. Maybe I missed it?

Thanks for the help and information in advance.

Thankfully, PCBSD is a KDE desktop only.
I have used it for a couple fo years and know of no GNOME offering.
Maybe someone else is aware of one..........

Unfortunately, my aging laptop doesn't like KDE or Gnome. I'm going to install it and see if I can find xfce, openbox, or fluxbox.

Thanks.

I dont' know how low powered your laptop is but..........
Your choices could be a linux with an XFCE desktop or FreeBSD with XFCE...
I suppose you could add XFCE to PCBSD but I never tried........

yeah, i've been running Slackware with xfce for the past 5 or so years on this laptop. even when i had the resources, i was never a big fan of kde or gnome. just too much of a minimalist, i guess.

XFCE is available as a PBI, as is Enlightenment. Gnome and KDE 3 are, too.

I have to say though that KDE4.2 is not overly resource-hungry. I have it here on an old box with 2 x Athlon 3000 MP CPUs, 1.5 GB of RAM, 20 GB hd and nVidia Ti5200 graphics card.
And since PC-BSD is built with KDE at its heart, you will never get rid of KDE completely, even if you run another DE.
