Default PC-BSD Updater Server is Broken
When is the Updater server going to be back up and operational? I continually get the error that the Updater cannot connect to the server. However, the PBI portion seems to work fine. I asked this question a couple of days ago, but I guess somebody deleted it rather than answer it.

I recall someone asking this question before; however, I never deleted it and I doubt any of the other moderators did either.

I'll look into this problem with the updater.

Thank you!

btw, my firewall is off and ip's are assigned through DHCP. PC-BSD version is 7.1.1

I apologize if my post seemed unfriendly; that was not my intent. If you'll check any of my other posts in the PC-BSD forums, you'll see that I try to maintain the utmost in courtesy.

I have spoken with the lead developer and he just wants you to answer the following:

of these commands:

# nslookup sysupdate.pcbsd.org

# nslookup ftp.pcbsd.org

Can you ping both of those servers?
I'll be more than happy to send your answers back to him.

Also, I am currently not on a computer running PC-BSD and therefore have not been able to check the updater, so if anyone else is having the same problem please answer the above questions from Kris and I will be more than happy to send your answers to him.

Default Re: PC-BSD Updater Server is Broken
Galraedia, thank you, and please tell Kris Moore thank you for me. Below is the requested information.

<First, what version of PC-BSD are you running and is it 32bit / 64bit?>
Todd: I an running 7.1.1 32 bit PC-BSD. The PC-BSD firewall is disabled.

<Also, are you trying to do a system update, or a PBI update?>
Todd: I am trying to do a system update. The PBI update seems to work okay. Please see note below.

<And also please send me the output of these commands:>

<# nslookup sysupdate.pcbsd.org>

Todd: [todd@pcbsd /usr/home/todd]$ nslookup sysupdate.pcbsd.org
Server: 192.168.0.1
Address: 192.168.0.1#53

Non-authoritative answer:
sysupdate.pcbsd.org canonical name = ftp.pcbsd.org.
Name: ftp.pcbsd.org
Address: 206.125.170.52

<# nslookup ftp.pcbsd.org>

Todd: [todd@pcbsd /usr/home/todd]$ nslookup ftp.pcbsd.org
Server: 192.168.0.1
Address: 192.168.0.1#53

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: ftp.pcbsd.org
Address: 206.125.170.52

<Can you ping both of those servers?>

Todd: Neither address responds to a ping.

When trying to do the system update, the exact error I get is the following text presented in a pop-up window after running Software & Updates from the Systems Settings application: "Could not contact the PC-BSD update server! Please check your internet connection or proxy settings under Configuration"

I am not running a proxy, and I have verified all my connections and configurations (that is not to say that I don't have a misconfiguration somewhere). My Linux box is connected to the same home network as my PC-BSD box, and I tried pinging and using traceroute from it - also no response.

A note about PBI updates. When the system checks for updates, it finds one for Wine. When I click the Install button, I get the same pop up message about being not able to contact the server, however, the update downloads and then installs and seems to finish okay. The next time I check for PBI updates, it says everything is updated.

By the way, I also noted that when doing the system update, after I click the OK button on the "Could not contact" message box, the system updater says my system is up to date. The system tray icon though has the red circle with the line through it and its message says it could not contact the server.

Hope this helps.

Thanks again for checking out this problem.

I've tried to browse to the above site with different browsers - no success. My ISP is Qwest, and I just got off the phone with their tech support. They are not able to ping or connect to the site either. They also told me that there are no restrictions or blocks on my account. Is it possible that PCBSD's ftp host service is blocking requests from any of Qwest's IP's?.

I'm waiting for a reply back so until then why don't you try testing the ping at http://www.pingtest.net/

This was a great idea. It turns out that I could not ping that site, so I tried a bunch of others - basically, no dice. So I called Qwest (my ISP) one more time, and we discovered a couple of settings in the hardware firewall were causing problems. I can now ping 205.125.170.52 okay. So I excitedly ran the update manager, and would you believe - I still get the same error - cannot connect to the server. Jeesh!

I am currently checking other configurations.

This is the reply I have received from Kris,

Josh, the story is that a user can't do updates, and upon checking they can't
even ping ftp.pcbsd.org (the IP is correct). They contacted QWest techs, and they
can't ping it either. Do we have some blocking or anything in place to cause this?
From Kris and Josh's response I believe that the hardware firewall is definitely the source of the problem. If you can I would recommend disconnecting the router from the computer and hooking your DSL modem directly to it. You can do this temporarily. If you are then able to access ftp://ftp.pcbsd.org you should then be able to use the updater in PC-BSD. After this you can hook your router back up or you can choose to use a software firewall instead. For more information go here.
If you don't feel like disconnecting the router or for some reason you are unable to, you can always download the alpha version of PC-BSD 8.0 which should contain all the updates made to PC-BSD 7.1.1 along with other new features.
