Default The operating system of my dreams :)
I have writen down features and caracteristics of the OS of my dream. Probably nothing that any OS will reach, but maybe we can get some ideas to re-vamp PC-BSD 8)

These are the caracteristics:

- Updates of all OS and all installed software on a daily basis automatically in the background, downloading updates from mirrors
- Integrated and pro-active anti-virus and anti-spyware
- List of hundreds of applications to install/uninstall, organized into a hierarchy. To install, just select checkboxes and click "Update" ; it will install or uninstall stuff, depending on what you ckecked/unchecked
- Source code, binaries and security updates are stored on mirrors and on other people's computers using a P2P advanced application. Authentication of genuine software is done through MD5 to prevent spyware
- Auto-detection, configuration and installation of all hardware
- Good hardware compatibility (at least all that is sold in retail store, including winmodems and winprinters!)
- Firewall with GUI and simple/advanced control panel
- Intuitive installation of the OS with advanced options
- Great integration with dual-boot
- Full support with languages, installs all software and configures everything into your own language, OS, terminal, software, etc...
- Groups of applications specialized for specific tasks, ie:
-> Image browser, multimedia player, advanced web browser such as Opera, e-mail, etc.
-> LAMP, sendmail, PostgreSQL and BlueFish
- Easy network configuration, with other computers, printers, etc.
- P2P software: Choose what you want to share, what maximum upload bandwidth. When the person accesses the Internet (ie: web page query), she has priority over the P2P application. When the person isn't using the web, the P2P application can use the full bandwidth.
- Concatenation/Division of storing partitions/units
- Nice and eye-candy GUI
- Installs only what is needed (don't bloat the system with software you'll never use).
- Installs as an option commercial software that most people use: RealOne player, Flash Player, Acrobat Reader, Quick Time, etc... Downloading from the vendor's web site on the fly, and the OS package configures it and installs it.
- Suggestion box to always enhance the OS
- Full encryption (IM, e-mail, P2P, VoIP)
- Backup software (easy)
- Easy network, DNS, domain name, IP configuration
- 3D desktop with icons evolving in a 3D environment (sky, water, etc...)
- Users profiles with different confiigurations
- Remote access
- Folders sharing for groups and users
- COnfiguration of distributed CPU resources between several computers using distcc, and also for HDD, RAM, etc... To reach the performance of a cluster easily.
- VoIP-ready with voicemail, virtual telephone in the background

This is just a personal opinion

Oh for heaven's sake. Viruses and Spyware can be controlled (I've actually had very few problems with them on my Windows boxes), and I honestly don't give a rip about Bill Gates.

I use a Unix-like system for its tools, its programming environment, and the software tools (that is, programs) that it can run. I would think that this would be the primary motivation.

Some people get a little carried away with their enthusiasm. I've been using Windows since 95(except ME, what a disaster) and haven't had any problems with spyware/viruses or system crashes. If you know how to maintain the OS, use the right tools and some common sense(don't click the "yes" button on random popups!) it runs just fine.

I also use Mac OS X, several flavors of Linux and I'm keeping a close eye on PC-BSD because I've always been interested in Unix or Unix-like derivatives.

Reading through this thread and of coarse respecting Charles and all of you for that matter...I just gotta throw in my 2 cents.

My dream system would have Unix security and a compleate and very tight GUI ( better than windows) would be nice to have all the above mentioned in this thread as well and I see all this comming together in PCBSD anyway.

But what I realy want is a system I can conduct day to day business on. Most of us, I believe are not code critters or could care less about bells and whistles. These things last not first

don't get me wrong...yes it would be "cool" to have this and "cool" to have that. But would it not be much cooler to have a business tool that anyone can use.....this is the one and only thing this oleman and Bill Gates can agree on.

I think Kris is well aware of the potential in this area and indeed will take us all to that point and beyond becuase he tends to solve problems in the right order and becuase this much momentum is hard to stop. I for one am going nuts with anticipation of a world class control panel.
