Default Networking issue
I'm new to free/pc-bsd. I just installed it on a new computer (Toshiba Satellite P305D-S8900), and when I tried to configure my network interfaces with the graphical tool, I got the following errors:

Could not parse XML file ().
Could not open file /proc/net/route.
Could not parse the XML file ()

The output from ifconfig is:

fwe0: flags=8802<BROADCAST,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> metric 0 mtu 1500
options=8<VLAN_MTU>
ether 02:1b:24:5e:39:35

Can anybody clue me in as to what's going on / how to fix it?

I don't know about the xml parsing errors, but from ifconfig, you don't have a 10/100/1000 or wireless network adapter recognized.

Provide the output of dmesg.

Most probably, you'll have to wrap a windows binary driver to operate it using ndsigen

If I've enabled Linux compatibility should I be able to install Linux drivers? Or does that sound unbelievably stupid?

ndisgen has been giving me errors that it's not recognizing the .INF files. A friend of mine had the same problem way back, and pretty much gave up. Is there some way to fix this, or at least get an equivalent script that could work?

Silly question, but are you talking about a wireless network? If so, do you have the wireless switch on the computer turned on? I believe Toshiba uses the Atheros wireless, for which FBSD7.2 has drivers built into the kernel. You might also try going into /boot/loader.conf and looking for the "ath" line under the wireless driver section. If it has a "NO" at the end, change it to "YES" and see if that works.

I'm under the impression that even if the wireless switch is turned off, you'll still have it show in dmesg,

from the dmesg of the user:

Code:
pci2: <network> at device 0.0 (no driver attached)
and there is no indication of any wireless device....

so ndisgen is the way to go, I think....
