Default No Dump Device defined
I have been on the search for a stable 64bit Linux and your the 5th, so not sure if this is a quick visit or hopefully a long term visit

I downloaded the latest PC BSD and checked the MD5sum. All okay. I have tried endless times to load and re-burn the disk, but all I get is
'Cannot dump
No Dump Device defined'.

I can't see why this could be, it will be a dual boot, I have 50GB for WinXP and 162GB for Linux and the rest spare as its a 220GB hard drive. I reformatted the 162GB after it refused to load, thinking it may be that I hadn't gotten rid of MEPIS. Still had the same problem. It was a long shot but didn't work.

How can I over come this? Difficult to re-download as I have used up my bandwidth now.

Many thanks

Tony

Hello Tony,

First of all, PC-BSD is not a Linux distribution, but rather a different Unix-like OS. It's FreeBSD prettied up, so to speak.
Second, I don't quite understand your problem. Are you unable to burn the CDs to install PC-BSD, or is the OS refusing to install?
If it's the latter, it could be due to the fact that it has to be installed to a primary partition, extended partitions won't work.

And if I may give you another piece of advice - 8 GB isn't really enough for this OS, I have it on an old box with an 18 GB drive, and after installation - with ports tree, Gimp, Amarok, FF, Thunderbird, Filezilla, extra Plasma toys and some other applications, but not everything that's offered during installation - I had about 10 GB left (the OS is a bit on the space-hungry side, one reason for that is probably the use of PBIs - self contained installers that install programs with all their dependencies, so there will be some duplicaition).

Ooops Sorry about the Linux confusion!! ops:

Firstly I think 162GB's should just about fit PC-BSD I think
I have already burnt the disk and the MD5sum is fine. The OS won't load it just goes through all the motions of loading and at some point it just states
'Cannot dump
No Dump Device defined'.
Then it asks be to turn off the computer. Thats it. I have tried several times, as I have stated without success.

Do you have a way around this problem?

Thanks

Tony

Ok, I have located the problem and I took out my PCI USB card. That started the ball rolling. BUT!! As usual thing are never that simple as I have always found out. My comp has a USB mouse and USB everything else. It doesn't like USB!! I can't believe in this modern age it won't accept USB. So have to give up unless anyone has any other suggestions??

Thank you so much for your assistance. After searching around I can't resolve it, looks like a good OS, but it looks as if I shall never know. Just another one to tick off the list.

That is unfortunate.
I am using a USB pointing device myself (MS Trackball Optical) and I have not ever experienced any problems with that.
Are you saying that your box doesn't have USB ports other than those provided by your extension card?

No I am not saying that, its brand new comp. I have a 5 usb PIC unit and 6 USB ports on the computer. All handling External hard drives, printer, scanner, DVD/CD player/recorder and camera etc. I also have USB keyboard and mouse.

I found this in the forum
http://forums.pcbsd.org/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=12900

So, taking into account that I can only remove the USB pci card I am rather stuck. It seems a very, very strange thing for this to happen and not have active USB ports to load an OS.

Hello Tony et al,

I have the same problem, and have usb wireless keyboard & mouse (logitech), so I cannot disable usbs. I have been using the 32-bit version happily but I felt that it was time to get some advantage from my 64 bit cpu! This is not good enough!

Back to Debian x64, I'm afraid,
Chris.
