Default Cups printing problems
Hi,

I'm trying to get my HP Photosmart 7350 working with 7.0.2. But all I get is nonsense on paper. The printer installation is ok :
adding a new device : in the list is my hp photosmart, which I select.
In the list of models on the next screen, there are only a Color Laserjet, Designjets, one Deskjet, a whole series of Laserjets to end with the Mopier series. So I "provide a ppd file" from /usr/local/share/ppd/HP/hp-photosmart_7350-hpijs.ppd.gz (I even "unzipped" the .gz file and used that one).
After clicking on Add Printer, the printer gets installed without any problem (for cups at least) :

Printer Driver: HP PhotoSmart 7350 Foomatic/hpijs, hpijs 2.8.2.10
Printer State: idle, accepting jobs, published.
Device URI: hp:/usb/photosmart_7350?serial=MY258230TS2E

Printing the Test Page works fine, but everything else fails : mails from Kontact, firefox3 pages, konqueror pages,... nothing gets anything readable on paper. All I get is some random characters and some lines on paper.
Any hints on how to resolve this ?
Thanks !
Beni.

Now that the printer is installed, is it set as the _system default_?

To set it as the system default printer:

(1) load a browser,
(2) type localhost:631 in the URL address bar to enter the CUPS configuration
(3) click on "Manage Printers",
(4) click on "Set as Default".

You might have to scroll to the right to see the button as it is the second button from the right edge of the page.

It is set as "Delfault Printer". It is the only printer installed by the way :

Showing 1 of 1 printer.
Sort Descending
7350 (Default Printer)
Description: 7350
Location:
Printer Driver: HP PhotoSmart 7350 Foomatic/hpijs, hpijs 2.8.2.10
Printer State: idle, accepting jobs, published.
Device URI: hp:/usb/photosmart_7350?serial=MY258230TS2E

Print Test Page Stop Printer Reject Jobs Move All Jobs Cancel All Jobs Unpublish Printer Modify Printer Set Printer Options Delete Printer Set As Default Set Allowed Users
Sort Descending

I will scan a page and post it somewhere if you realy interested, no problem

Running /PCBSD/Services/hplip/run-toolbox.sh shows me my Photosmart printer in what should be and seems to be an working condition.

I noticed that you had the printer working with some Firefox and other applications (but not Kontact) when you posted two months ago:

Quote:
I'm using 7.0.1

When I try to print something from Kontact, a mail from kmail or a news from knode, all I get is nonsense : random characters on my paper.
Firefox3 and kwrite print fine, all as it should be.
I'm using a HP Photosmart 7350 that I set up via Cups.
Is there a problem with Kontact (or is anybody having the same issue?) or a config problem somewhere ?
So I wonder, did you set up the printer with the same driver and filter under 7.0.1 and 7.0.2?

How is printing a simple file from a text editor like KWrite?

Is the Photosmart 7350 a postscript printer?

I don't have a Photosmart 7350 or other USB printer to test with, but I have had past experiences with HP LaserJets where I was given a choice of several "filters" like foomatic, Gutenprint, etc. (Filters convert the print job data into the final language and formats understood by your printer.) Make the wrong choice and you can spew out pages of random characters from a simple print job because the filter is misinterpreting the data. So -- is the foomatic/hpijs the only driver choice or are there other filters that you can test? The Gutenprint filter seems to be a common choice for HP Laserjets managed by CUPS and perhaps this will be an option to try instead of foomatic.

This link is a little old, but perhaps it will shed some light on drivers, filters, and printers:

It is still more or less the same problem that I had some months ago, indeed.
I copied and pasted your answer in Kwrite and printed it without any problem ! All clear and readable text...
The ppd file is the same one that I've been using for some time now, and it worked for me in a previous version of (desktop bsd) with kde3.x (and the same one I installed when I did a fresh install over that desktopbsd to go to pc-bsd v7.0.1).
I seem to have read somewhere that the hpijs is now part of the hplip package, so you don't have to install it separately any more.
The Photosmart 7350 is not a laserprinter but a inktjet, so I don't know if it will work properly with a driver for the LaserJet series.
