512mb / 1Ghz for KDE3 is bullcrap, I've run 3.4.3 through 3.5 on much less then that without problems, and if the ol'gal needed swap to pull it off - I never had a performance problem. Now KDE4 ottoh, I _might_ believe those specs if you are including the necessities of heavy eye candy.

my vote -> other

My desktop environment is more of a standard operating environment that I've built up.
  • A lightweight but configurable window manager (Blackbox, FVWM2, WMaker, etc)[/*:m:4kxwupib]
  • A suitable terminal emulator (Terminal, urxvt, xterm etc)[/*:m:4kxwupib]
  • support utilities for odds and ends (bbkeys, fbpanel, and my own psetbg)[/*:m:4kxwupib]
  • My preferred set of applications (zsh, vim, xchat, etc)[/*:m:4kxwupib]

and I've taken efforts to automate this process a fair bit, lol. That is what I use (currently with blackbox & Terminal) and what I _like_, just like my development environment it is 'made to order' just to my tastes, as much as possible without taking the time to write my own everything.

If I was designing something like PC-BSD today, I would use Gnome by default - Xfce4 if my target was for machines made before 1998.

You really ought to have included KDE 4 in this list, after all, it is the default DE in PC-BSD.

Maybe OpenBox.
You could throw out Gnome 1 instead.

CWM Calm Window Manager here :idea:

I did use OpenBox for a very long time but it became too bloated. I also like very much DWM (Dynamic Window Manager) and of course TWM (Tom's Windows Manager).

Well , If gnome will identify my 3 :twisted: 20 GB Sea-Gate :twisted: drive then I will be preferring gnome. With all the modern uses of SD cards and larger drives , Why didn't they revise the code to accept theses things? other then it would be a great system, I liked the built in flash features that allowed access right away, oh I am also unhappy that it didn't recognize my Linksys Wireless card

But, I know nothing is perfect , but man it is way more faster then Ubuntu. I h ad a great deal of issues with them. In fact I have had a few issues with a great deal of Linux based operations ranging from failed communications with :arrow: :?: wi-fi :?: to having to search through the countless repositories to get flash and java to work.

I see though with this its all in there, No , I am trying to figure out how to get it to recognize my external :idea: HDD, :idea: M y Built in :?: USB mass storage drive :?: along with its sd cards.. if some one can refer me to a link where I can simply cut and paste edits that would be greatly appreciated :!: :mrgreen: :idea: lol

Fluxbox for me. Clean, simple, to the point! I only install what i need and use!

If i had to choose though, i'd go XFCE4 then maybe Gnome2.
