Hi, How was the problem fixed, please? I had the same identical problem when I upgraded my FreeBSD to 5.4 from 5.3. I have been using Freesbie 1.1 installed on a HD by itself, and when I finished installworld, installkernel, etc. all I could do to mount root and all, was to plug my drive to the IDE controller input that was referenced. Obviously, it used to work! Also, how can one modify the fstab file when the root and other directories / partitions are manually mounted? I was able to mount root, usr, etc... but could never save the changes I made to fstab using ee or vi. Any clarification would be appreciated. I do like PCBSD but would prefer it without KDE. I've been experimenting with PCBSD under Black Box and Fluxbox but I'm just a novice and I accumulate failures (my own) and some success. Thanks.

Roland,
I'd suggest to you that you could install PCBSD as it is, and just add Fluxbox from ports. I added Enlightenment, Fluxbox, and Gnome to test them out, and they all worked fine alongside KDE. The KDM login manager works great in allowing you to choose what session you want to run, and quite honestly, some of the best programs out there require KDE libraries (K3b, etc.). With the size of harddrives these days, it's not that hard of a hit to have multiple window managers installed.
Even an 8 GB harddrive could take a 4gb Unix installation with multiple managers.

Thanks, Jamie (?) I have done that and modified / created my .xinitrc file to boot straight to fbox. I guess what I meant to say was that I'd like to see the possibility to choose, at install time, what WM to use; say maybe having a choice for a full desktop install and a minimalist install, again like with FreesBIE but with the PBI function added to it. I know that we do already have FreesBIE out there, but we still have to install apps via pkg_add -r or via ports, and I believe that the PBI idea is a good idea even if you end up with duplicate libs... Say, what about the mountroot problem solution? How was it solved? Just curious, since I fought this issue for a while (with PCBSD 0.8 also by the way) and I thought that I had to re-install many times... and did. Also, what happened to the Michael and Mary site? I used Michael's How to's and his scripts on PCBSD 0.7.x successfully and I am about to use his work on DesktopBSD to see how far I can go before destroying everything, which seems to have become a bad habit for me. Anyway, he had a good way to explain and some good scripts to use and analyze. By the way, maybe it was all of Mary's work or both their work so thanks to the both of them for work well done...

Actually it ended up being a kernel mis-config that caused the issues. The kernel I booted on the cd with didn't use the atapi static device numbering, and the kernel on the HD did. So when you booted, sometimes /dev/ad0, would turn into /dev/ad1, which made the fstab file incorrect. This occured if your HD was on the second IDE master channel.
