Other Operating Systems
There are other sub mainstream operating systems and accompanying desktop environments out there, some of which merit looking at.
Two comprehensive lists:
Royal Pingdom
Crunch Gear

Heavens! When you say "other", are you implying that PC-BSD is somehow "sub mainstream"?
One not mentioned is Athene http://www.rocklyte.com/athene/index.html although I guess it's really a Linux hybrid in its OS form. I've had fun playing with it at a basic (i.e. moron) level. I'm kinda surprised that the developers actually keep releasing every couple of years.
Another interesting, and practical, OS is Contiki http://www.sics.se/contiki/. It packs an awful lot in a very small package.

Code footprint is on the order of kilobytes and memory usage can be configured to be as low as tens of bytes.

Re: Other Operating Systems
I like to study how various OSes work, but I find unix-likes are my staple for real work. Everything else just seems to be lacking to me :\

MenuetOS, also known as MeOS, is an operating system written entirely in assembly language which makes it very small and fast. Even though it includes a graphical desktop, networking and many other features it still fits on a single 1.44 MB floppy disk (for our younger readers, that was the USB stick of the 80s and early 90s ).

This makes me feel old....

Re: Other Operating Systems
I don't recall seeing Linspire mentioned.
I was reminded of it by this parody video.

Re: Other Operating Systems
Yes it is, and apparently they are jointly cooperating with Ubuntu in some way, I read somewhere.
Seem to be some advantages over Ubuntu - larger package DB, and a different way of managing/installing packages, but both are based on Debian.
Of no interest to me - I stay away from the Linux discombobulation.

Re: Other Operating Systems
Linspire, the company, is no more. Linspire, the distribution, lives on for a little bit.
Linspire got bought out by Xandros in July of this year. They had a lot of things in common from the beginning - I believe Xandros actually wrote some of the Linspire tools and used a variation of that work in their own product. They were also targeting the same sort of Linux user.

I remember when "Corel Linux" was released in 1999(ish). It was just wonderful! Then shortly after Microsoft bought 60 million or so dollars worth of Corel stock and in no time Corel just seemed to drop their really GOOD linux distro. Funny how coincidences like that just pop up Xandros got Corel linux after that ..... in case anyone is interested

Re: Other Operating Systems
I always wanted to try Corel Linux...
I'm not surprised to hear that about Linspire/Xandros though. I've never used either (not my bag), but I remember Xandros did a number on one of my friends desktops lol.
I have a feeling, the future will be a very buntu filled one, for better or worse :-(

After I started with Redhat (which i had problems with) I used Corel Linux after that, and absolutely loved it. I gave me a nice excited feeling when installing and using it, but I don't really get that feeling anymore with Linux distros...
