finding the processor temperature on intel 845g on dell gx26

Some days ago I got an old dell gx260 with pentium 4 2GHz and Intel 845G chipset. I would like to find out the temperature in the processor if it is possible. However all the methods I try have failed so far.

sysctl hw.acpi displays no thermal data so I guess hw.acpi.thermal is not supported.

if I try to install mbmon and load the smb modules
kldload smbbus, ichsmb, smb so that /dev/smb0 shows up and
I try mbmon I get that /dev/smb0 is not configured

if I try ipmitool sensor i get that there is no /dev/ipmi0 etc. even though the ipmi.ko is loades without errors.

since I only want to find the temperature anything that works would be good.

Is it possible to install lmsensors for linux and use the linux compatibility. since I'm just 2 days into Freebsd I really have no clue if this is possible since it seems like something that is not suited for emulation.

I'm new to FreeBSD and the whole unix/linux business and not a computer stud, so I might have no clue if what I want to do is possible.

Not my field so I can't be of much help.

As far as lmsensors goes, it depends on how it works.

If it depends on the Linux kernel it won't work.

If it only depends on /proc/* crap, then it might work as long as you have procfs mounted. It is not the same arrangement as Linuxes /proc afaik but you never know.

Thank you for your response, I have not had the time to see how lm-sensors would work in the linux emulation. Right now I'm considering it, but I have no idea if it is even feasible, like you said if it depends on the linux kernel.

There is a version for the 2.4 kernel but also for the 2.6 kernel. For the 2.4 version you need libraries but they are included in the 2.6 kernel it says. Does this mean that the 2.6 version is a no go, even if I upgrade the linux emulation to fc6 or f7 or f8?

By the way what is the deal with fc-4 being the standard for PC-bsd/freebsd when you select linux compatibility? Does the f-8 port not work properly for i386?

Do not waste time on linux emulation, special linux kernel drivers can not be emulated in any usefull way.

Instead you may try coretemp module from >= FreeBSD 7.0

Is the coretemp module not only for Intel core? I have a Pentium 4 with 845G chipset. Anyhow this is what I get when I have loaded the coretemp.ko:

1) Is the fc-4 the only linux-emulator that works on freebsd? (In the freebsd handbook they only mention fc-4)

I see that there are also fc-6,f7,f8 and other linux distributions. When I try to install f7 it complains that

linux_base-f7-7 compat.linux.osrelease: 2.4.2 is not supported.

Stop in /usr/ports/emulators/linux_base-f7.

but I guess you can bypass this by using sysctl to set compat.linux.osrelease=2.6.16. However where I read this there were still problems and they were trying out "patches", but this was very long ago back in Mar 2007.
2) Has all this been resolved now? since I not confident enough to mix with all this "patch" business. Some simple linux programs does seem to work for me though in fc-6.

Again. Hardware stuff can not be emulated, even if it is emulated results would not be correct.

the newer fc* require a newer version of FreeBSD.

The other versions, I dunno about (never tried them).
