Default Problem with pkg_add
Hello alltogether,

I'm coming from the Linux world and wanted to try something new - and so I found PC-BSD; and I really like what I see in my first few hours with it, so I have to say: very good work

For the moment I have just 1 problem: I want to install pokerth, to kill some time from time to time...

Typing "whereis pokerth" answers with "/usr/ports/games/pokerth" - OK, so it is in the tree.

But doing then "pkg_add -r pokerth" gives me just the following:

Error: FTP Unable to get ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/ports ... okerth.tbz: File unavailable (e.g., file not found, no access)
pkg_add: unable to fetch 'ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/ports/i386/packages-6.3-release/Latest/pokerth.tbz' by URL

Looking under ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/ports ... se/Latest/ shows me, that there is indeed no package "pokerth" available.

Am I doing something wrong or do I have stumbled upon an error?

Thanks in advance,
Thomas

Not every port have its package. Use port instead.

games/pokerth doesn't have a package because:

MANUAL_PACKAGE_BUILD= requires large memory to build

Hi,
you could try to change ftp server. You can change ftp server using

Code:
setenv PACKAGEROOT "ftp://your.ftp.mirror.of.choice"
in a root shell and then perform pkg_add -r pokerth.
You can look for ftp servers in the freebsd handbook or in the fresh ports site.

Thank you all for your answers and pointing my newbie-nose into the right direction.
Finally I did it exactly as DragnLord mentioned.

I heard a lot of positive things about the *BSD Ports system in the past, but I actually didn't expect it to work as smooth as it did for me right now...

Thanks again,
Thomas

No, this won't do any good, because as I already said (But you apparently didn't bother to read) a package isn't built because it is specifically disabled by the port.

Hi,
Yesterday I've searched for pokerth package here http://www.freshports.org/. The package was listed so, I've thought it was possible to add. Take it easy
Bye, Daniele
