Default Uninstall PC-BSD and install Ubuntu
It looks like my laptop is not among those supported for HP. It doesn't detect my Wireless LAN card. Now I want to wipe PC-BSD and put Ubuntu on there. If I burn an Ubuntu CD or put the ISO onto a thumb drive, how do I get the PC-BSD boot loader or other program to install that now? I would appreciate any tips. I tried to create a dual-boot device but PC-BSD wrote over my Windows install earlier.

I had created another thread for the wifi issue over here.

here's a thread from the forums -- http://forums.pcbsd.org/showthread.php?t=14273 -- there will probably be some work involved, though, getting the disk set up correctly.

if you want to overwrite the PC-BSD install, you should be able to just follow the install process & select to install Ubuntu to the entire disk.

HTH

I'm downloading the full USB version of PC-BSD now and I'm going to try to make it coexist with Ubuntu. Ubuntu (like Windows) seemed to support my wifi without any special tinkering.

you're in the thick of experiencing this for yourself, but it bears saying: FreeBSD (and as a result PC-BSD) doesn't follow the "everything and the kitchen sink" mentality of a lot of the Linux distros. the burden of implementing (or attempting to implement) the correct drivers is placed on the user; that being said, i think Kris & Co. have done an awesome job of getting us *most* of the way there, but sometimes there will be hiccups.

depending on how things work out with the wireless driver, you might consider submitting a hardware report for your specific HP model to the FreeBSD list (http://laptop.bsdgroup.de/freebsd/index.html).
