upgrading via command-line

i have server edition installed via 20120621 snapshot, and would like to upgrade to the latest beta. and then to -release, once available. none of the gui tools are installed of course, and the upgrade notes that i've found do not cover this situation.

how would i go about performing the upgrade?

pc-updatemanager is a command-line utility that was included with subsequent snapshots. i downloaded/built that from source, and it was able to take me to 9.1-beta1.

can you elaborate on how you did it ?
i ve been breaking my head after an interrupt thru the gui and everytime it says system is uptodate !
i too wish to be carried into rc-2 (which is the latest i think !)

rc1 is the latest. You can run "pc-updatemanager" command from the CLI,
and it'll give you a list of usage options.

i did that many times...
i followed the update method, downloaded all the packages (base + gnome desktop and i had to interrupt that download in between when kde was being downloaded) i tried to restart the procedure but now i am getting system is up to date and i didnt get the console pop up asking for upgrading the downloaded packages.

now ive downloaded the usb full image for RC1. is there a way i can use that to upgrade without affecting my downloaded softwares and customizations ? OR do i have to go for a clean install ?

You can install fresh, but can you post the output of this?

honestly speaking, i have the rc1 usb full ready on my hdd as i had a fresh download... but if i have to do that then can i retain my current configuration ? i doubt if i can ! but if that is possible then i ll be delighted to go about that ! as such 9.0 is working cool, i am doing all the jugglery simply coz i am unable to connet to my work place windows share and unable to connect the office printer...

Oh, you are on 9.0 still, so you will need to follow the instructions at
the end of the 9.1-RC1 release announcement, or wait for 9.1 to be
officially released:

* If you wish to update from 9.0 to RC1 you may do so by editing the "/usr/local/share/pcbsd/pc-updatemanager/conf/sysupdate.conf" file and changing the PATCHSET: variable to "pcbsdtest".

After changing this variable, you may run the updater utility, to download a new update manager. Once this update manager is installed, the online update to the RC1 version will appear.

freebsd-update is still needed to update kernel and base OS?

So proper sequence is this:

pc-updatemanager check
pc-updatemanager install <something>

freebsd-update check
freebsd-update install
