Default Equinox Desktop
Is it out of place for me to request Equinox be added?
It's relatively user friendly and is lighter then LXDE.

Is this available in the FreeBSD ports tree? I'm doing a quick check
here and not seeing it. If it is, we can easily add it still for 9.1.

I don't think it is...

I looked.

But I wish it could be added.

There isn't even .deb package for it. It usually needs to compiled, I think.

I have searched for it on the FreeBSD website and found this:

ede-2.0

I'm somehow puzzled by the requirements and can't really imagine that all of these are really needed. Then again, I'm rather new to this and have never actually used a Linux- or BSD-based OS; I'm interested in trying this now, however. I'd also like to see this desktop environment in PC-BSD, since it seems to offer a familiar look for a former Windows user.

Yay!

I can't believe you found a port for it. And it's the newest too.

But I couldn't find it on freshports. I guess it wasn't added officially.

I have to clarify that EDE is a desktop environment and not a window manager only. It uses Pekwm as it's window manager as pekwm is smaller then openbox.

So the dependencies shouldn't be surprising, but it's lighter then LXDE, so it's good for slower machines.

I didn't know about freshports until minutes later when I read about it in another thread. But it is also listed there:

http://www.freshports.org/x11-wm/ede/

Though, somebody marked it as broken, although it seems like somebody else got it to work immediately before that. The developer, however, seems to be responsive and helpful to people who had difficulties to get it running on other systems, as can be seen from the questions asked on the project forum:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/ede/forums/forum/249616

He might well assist in resolving any integration problems on BSD systems, should any such occur, too, I'd guess.

Is there any special requirement for software to have a "port" from FreeBSD? I read in the "Common PBI Questions & Answers", that "PBI" are taken from "ports" from FreeBSD and if the latter are not up-to-date, the former also won't be. I wonder what "PBI" are, if not just a rebranded "port". Other descriptions suggest that they might be something different, but the Q & A suggest otherwise.

I think, if they are something different andindependent from "ports",

it should be tried to integrate the software regardless of any possible "brokenness" in that "ports" system.

(I accidentally hit my mouse button while writing, which led to this odd interrupted post.)

I can add the item to our list of desktops, but until the port is fixed,
it wont install anything. Have you tried contacting the port maintainer?
