Live Linux CDs/DVDs boot straight into X without problems. I've tested several. PC-BSD 9.1-RC1 gets to the laboratory beaker splash. It displays nicely, full-screen. The fireball logo box overlay shows. The mouse arrow cursor looks fine. Then X bails. Console shows repeated "Failed to read: ..." notices.

BSD hardware support should be full for this old rig. The unit lives far from me; deep testing isn't feasible. I can do simple requests, perhaps. Tell me specific BSD commands in terminal. I could copy outputs to a USB stick and then relay here. Assume so in your instructions.
I didn't try fancy boot options, just menu choices. Both default and VESA menu choices failed identically.
Thank you, PC-BSD.
