It is very good that you posted, now you know that you only have to wait for 9.1 to have the feature you wanted, and 9.1 is not that far away.

OK, now here's how to make LXDE not manage your desktop anymore:

right click the desktop -> Desktop settings - > uncheck the "Manage the desktop and show file icons" checkbox -> OK.

If you wish to have LXDE manage your desktop again, the right click menu will not be available anymore, so go to Applications->Preferences->Desktop Wallpaper and check the above checkbox.

i posted a new thread but at the same time i simply deleted the icons of the apps that i had downloaded and installed. the 3 default icons (appcafe, control panel and pcbsd handbook) are shown up and i didnt dare to touch them lest i accidentally delete them !

are they just the desktop shortcuts which i can delete without any doubt ?

You needn't worry, AFAIK. You can access those apps from LXDE Applications menu. You can also access them by right clicking on the green update icon in the bottom right corner of the screen i.e. taskbar. I have also removed these elements from the desktop and didn't have any trouble running them.

As for the handbook, it may have gone for good, but you can always get it from the LiveUSB/LiveCD or from PCBSD's website.

Alternatively, maybe you can use photorec to recover the deleted files, but I don't think it's worth the effort.

i read that when i googled for that option. but when i right click my desktop > desktop settings i get 2 tabs, general and advanced. in the advanced tab, i get only one option to check or uncheck and that is to make the right click behave as the window manager behaves.... manage the desktop and show files icons is not visible... !

:-? You are right.
I'm not sure why PCBSD exposes this limited menu. At this point I think you have 2 options:

1. either wait for an answer from someone more knowledgeable than me, eventually post this issue on another PCBSD forum

2. or head for LXDE support forums and find a way to achieve what you want through command line

My advice is to just manually delete desktop icons created after a PBI is installed and wait for the 9.1 release where you'll have the option to disable this feature.
