Default X fail to start
X server fail to start after update from nvidia-driver-295.59 to 295.71; I have to downgrade back to 295.59. This might happen because mesa-demos also fail to upgrade from mesa-demos-7.6.1 to 7.6.1_1?

I try to solve the problem in other way, I've downloaded the newest driver from nvidia site and I followed the install instructions:

Quote:
Installation instructions: Once you have downloaded the driver, change to the directory containing the driver package and install the driver by running, as root, tar xzf NVIDIA-FreeBSD-x86_64-304.37.tar.gz && cd NVIDIA-FreeBSD-x86_64-304.37 & make install

and receive the next error:

Code:
===> x11 (install)
===> x11/driver (install)
===> x11/extension (install)
===> x11/bin (install)
===> x11/man (install)
===> doc (install)
ERROR: Failed to load the NVIDIA module!
*** Error code 1

Stop in /usr/local/src/NVIDIA-FreeBSD-x86_64-304.37

This doesn't work so I modify the nvidia-driver port makefile to the version just I downloaded (304.37).

Code:
DISTVERSION?= 304.37

and run

Code:
 # make makesum
The download and install of the driver went well, but after restart X still not started. Here is the log of errors received.

Xorg.0.log.zip

Kernel version:
Code:
#uname -r -m -s
FreeBSD 9.0-STABLE amd64
The system sources are synchronized with the kernel version (STABLE).Can someone give me an advice to solve this issue? Thank you in advance!

Hi,

It sounds like you've modified so much of the base FreeBSD OS that it may be impossible to repair. The reason that X cannot start is because it cannot initialize the NVIDIA kernel module. I suggest either reinstalling PC-BSD and don't modify the base OS or perhaps seek some advice on the FreeBSD forums since it sounds to me like you now have more of a FreeBSD system than a PC-BSD one.

First, PC-BSD is a cosmeticised FreeBSD and second X work normal with 295.59 driver. The problems appear when I try to update from 295.59 to 295.71 (which exist in ports) but after that update, X failed so I thought it's a problem with the driver from ports; then I try that artifice to install 304.37 from nvidia site and X failed again. Maybe I will find some answers on FreeBSD forum. Thanks for your time reading this post, have a nice day.

I solved this issue by update to 9.1-PRERELEASE, then rebuild world and kernel and now the nvidia-driver 304.37 is installed in my system.
SOLVED! Thread can be closed!
